Chapter Twenty-Nine
Garnet flew over the island. She was feeling so good. She and Isatu had come up with a great plan. They were such an amazing duo. She grinned at the dragon-puppy flying off to her left. She stared down at the island.
Why wasn’t the dungeon entrance appearing? Was there a problem?
She glanced to the south. “Big bro, the second wave is incoming and…” She frowned at a new type of monster girls flying with them. They had fiery wings but weren’t phoenixes. They looked like… angels? “Hey, Nina, what are those new monster girls flying at us.”
“No idea,” Nina Naughty said. “But we have bigger problems. There are invaders in the dungeon. We have to hold until Munjan mops them up.”
“Oh.” Garnet had a bad, bad feeling about those fiery-winged angels. So she focused on Fara. “Hey, Fara, what type of monster girls have flaming wings and flaming swords and, well, look like fiery Mrs. Lucinas?”
“Seraphim?” Fara answered. “Rotten leaves and moldering roots! Those are Level 4 monster girls!”
“What?” Garnet shouted out loud as Paetu and Feya led the flying monster girls toward the newcomers. There were ten of them. Ten Level 4 monster girls. “Pull back, Feya! We have to regroup! Those are—”
Waves of rolling fire erupted from the seraphim. The entire sky before the attacking force became a roiling wall of flames that swept over the hippogriffs, pixies, sphinxes, thunderbirds, Paetu, and Feya hurtling for it. A dozen monster girls vanished into those flames.
The heat reached Garnet. She gasped, her wings buffeted by it. The fire vanished with a loud growl. All the monster girls flying for the seraphim were gone. Taken out by one fiery burst of attack. An icy chill sank into Garnet’s guts.
“H-how did they do that?” she whimpered, the seraphim coming closer.
And they weren’t the only new monster girls. Galloping toward the bridge were pale-skinned women with fiery-red hair riding on black horses. Behind them strode…
“There are giants!” she shouted at the twelve-foot-tall women marching behind the monster girls on horses. They were clad in armor and carried weapons. Moving at their feet were frost-white women with icy hammers along with small, gray-furred foxes that scampered with them. “What is going on?”
The horsewomen reached the bridge. They ripped their heads off their shoulders and hurtled them at the gathering defenders. Crystal was urging the surviving monster girls into formation. Deathly black flames engulfed the flying heads. They crashed amid the monster girls on the island.
Detonated.
Ten eruptions of black flames ripped through the monster girls on the ground. Orcs, arachnes, will o’ wisps, hellhounds, and more died. Garnet trembled in the air. She looked around in horror. No reinforcements were coming. There were hardly any monster girls left. The seraphim were almost on her along with gray-winged and tawny-haired monster girls who shrieked like eagles.
“Big brother?” she sent, terrified.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I sprinted from the Vault, Fara and Kassie on my hills. “He really has level 4 monster girls?”
“it appears so!” Fara answered. “Garnet described seraphim, and Crystal said there was a force on horses that threw their heads. Those are dullahan, Level 4 Death monster girls.”
I had just lost half my surviving forces in less than a minute.
“Shit, shit, shit!” I snarled. “Siwang, he has Level 4 magic. I have no idea what he’ll be capable of.”
“We’re about to break through,” Siwang said. “I have a plan that should work anyways.”
“We don’t even know what Level 4 magic can do! His monster girls just massacred mine. Abort!”
“It’s too late,” said Siwang. “We’re in.”
“Shit!” I snarled as I burst into the throne room. I chanted out my first protective spell. “Strong and unyielding, let the granite of Lady Ki enhance!”
Strength of Mountains girded my limbs to give me the strength I would need in my fight.
“Steel wards with unyielding strength, let the defense of Lady Nisaba protect!”
Armor appeared around me. I clanked with Metal Coat, my stride increasing. Fara and Kassie rushed behind me. Level 4 Monster Girls! Level 4!
“Life energizes and enervates, let the grace of Lady Ianna empower!”
The warmth of Revitalize to give me more energy and sustain me in the fight washed through me.
“Light can bend, let the lie of Lady Sherida hide!”
My hands wavered and vanished as Bent Light made me invisible. I passed out of the throne room and down the hall of the teleport hub.
“Incarnation of flames, let the passion of Lady Lamashtu embrace!”
Flamebody transformed my body into the fire, the unseen inferno bursting out of gaps in the armor.
“Lightning crackle and hiss, gird me in the love of Lady Uttu!”
The air sizzled around me. Static Aura. My first defensive spell. One that had saved my life so many times.
“Gentle winds, let the support of Lady Tiamat billow!”
My feet lifted off the ground for a moment. Fly would be a very useful spell in this fight.
I marched onto the teleport circle that led to the battle. Kassie joined me while Fara stopped before it. She clasped her hands before her, her features calm, but I knew her well enough now to see the fear she was hiding.
“I love you, my lord,” she said and bowed.
“Asud Gu!” Kassie cried before I could answer.
Light flashed as I felt more of my monster girls dying. Not that there were many of them left any longer. They were being annihilated by these Level 4 bitches. The light faded and I was beneath the Temple of Water.
“Good luck!” Kassie said as my feet rose from the ground.
I shot forward, flying down the tunnel and up the stairs into the inner sanctum of the temple. I shot upward through doors thrown open by my monster girls. I passed the empty halls and out into the empty streets, my heart racing.
I had to do something. This had gone so wrong. So very, very wrong. I hadn’t been there for my monster girls. I had played general, and they died. They were massacred. I led them to their deaths once more.
I rose above the city. The river gleamed before me. I focused on the island. On the figures flying through the air. Waves of fire burned. Chunks of buildings soared through the air and crashed on the ground. Smerta died.
I clenched my fists and hurtled toward the fray. Invisible. Protected. I knew spells. Magics.
I would tear these bitches apart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Smerta vanished in a ball of fire.
Crystal stood in the midst of the surviving monster girls. She threw blades of ice at the burning angels in the sky, fire blazing from them. On the far bank, the giants ripped off chunks of buildings and hurtled them across the river. One chunk crushed two goblins and a satyr.
Garnet swooped through the sky, dodging the flying monster girls. Some were fast, zipping through the skies in blurring streaks. Crystal wanted to help her little sister, but she kept missing. Frustration boiled in her.
A frosty woman crossed the bridge and slammed her fist down. A burst of frost washed from her. Crystal raised her arms to ward herself. It washed cold around her, coating the ground in frost. It did nothing to Crystal, but it encased a nearby orc.
She was in mid-charge. She hit the ground and burst into frozen shards before vanishing.
“Bitch!” Crystal snarled and threw an ice dagger at the monster girl. The enemy blocked with her arm, the blade biting deep.
Something blurred from above and flashed before Crystal. Heat flared across her belly. She stared down to see a large chunk ripped out of her. She staggered and collapsed on her back. The frosty woman marched up and slammed her foot down on Crystal’s head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Morana clenched her fist at Crystal’s death. The banshee could do nothing. A headless rider charged for her and threw her head. It burst into deathly flames. It did nothing to Morana, but the unicorns around her screamed as they burned.
Morana shrieked.
Her deathly scream struck the rider. It killed the horse she rode, but the rider just hit the ground and came up in a stance. Morana didn’t know what to do. She wasn’t a fighter. This headless woman marched on with a martial form.
Something landed behind Morana.
She whirled around to find the erinys standing there, a cruel smile on the winged monster girl’s lips. She flicked her metal whip. The razor-sharp weapon blurred at Morana. The banshee screamed, the air warping before her.
The whip cut Morana in half. She died with the erinys.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mrs. Zoe Baldwin dove clear of the ghostly fire.
It burned behind her, consuming three of the werebears. They shrieked as the black flames consumed them. The dryad scrambled up, her motherly instincts blazing hot. The fury of a mama bear for her cubs swelled in her.
Through the carnage, the shesha slithered toward her. The fiery snake monster girl spread her hood and spat flames. Mrs. Baldwin dodged those, rolling across the ground and coming up with her toes growing into roots.
They slithered across the ground straight for the damned monster girl. The shesha snapped her head around to fire flames at Usiku charging close. The fomorian swung her blade before her and deflected the fire.
Mrs. Baldwin’s roots reached the shesha and wrapped up her body. She grabbed the tail and worked up the torso, squeezing. The shesha hissed in frustration, her head snapping around. Heat danced around her as she gathered flames.
The dryad didn’t flinch. She couldn’t dodge the attack, but…
Usiku closed the distance and cut the shesha in half. The fomorian’s blade of darkness passed through the enemy monster girl, bursting her into motes. Mrs. Baldwin’s roots held nothing now but air, outlining where the shesha had been.
Usiku smiled at Mrs. Baldwin. A shadow fell on her.
Before Mrs. Baldwin could scream a warning. A hunk of masonry slammed down on Usiku and crushed her. the rubble burst into pieces. A hunk slammed into Mrs. Baldwin. It threw her down, her chest caved in. She spasmed on the ground, unable to breathe.
She stared up at the sky, fire burning. Garnet wove through death. Mrs. Baldwin watched her daughter before her crushed body gave out and she died.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Death swooped through the air as Nina Naughty flew over the bridge. The giants ripped the buildings apart and threw them across the river. They had to be stopped. Anger boiled in Nina Naughty as she threw a pitchfork at one of the tall women.
It struck her in the throat. The giant flinched and bellowed, anger in her eyes. She swatted at the devil, the hand rushing for her. Nina flapped her wings and pulled up. The hand passed beneath her and spun her around.
She tumbled in the air, fighting to stay up.
Beneath her, she spotted Vilkas pouncing on one of the headless riders. She slammed into the woman and carried her off her horse. Nina caught herself as Vilkas sparked with lightning. She ripped out the guts of the headless woman.
She died.
They killed one.
One.
But there were so many more.
Nina Naughty hurtled a flaming pitchfork at one of the frosty women, hoping it would do more good. Her attack hurtled down as the woman punched the ground. Frost burst from her attack and killed two of the werewolves.
The pitchfork struck the frosty woman in the back. The monster girl arched her spine in pain. Several of the werefoxes jumped at her, their red-furred bodies landing on her. They bit into her only for frost to flash over them. They died.
Nina Naughty hurtled down another pitchfork and took the frosty monster girl in the head, bursting her into sparks.
We can do this, the porn star thought. We can—
A spine buried into her back. She spun around to see the manticore flying at her. A monster girl already slain. The poison in the stinger burned through Nina. Her wings stopped working. Her entire body spasmed as she hurtled toward the ground.
As she fell, she watched Leo’s monster girls perish. They had lost.
She struck the ground.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They died so fast as I hurtled for the battlefield.
Chara died. Engana. Mala. Tarkiyusis. Paetu. Vida. Horca. Bjorni. Gyvate. Grobi. Ipalsi. and Nevidena in a heartbeat of each other. I hurtled through the sky. There was hardly anything left. Lana Fulmine soared through the sky, My favorite movie star dodged a wave of fire only for a monster girl flying so fast, she was a streak to kill her.
My little sister soared through the sky, dodging foes, her black wings beating.
Isatu’s fire engulfed one of the fast-flying monster girls. She became a torch. Another struck Isatu from behind, ripping off her wing. Isatu plummeted for the ground, out of range of Bow of Life. I was nearly there, and almost nothing was left.
Agubnamus breathed water that slammed into another of the fast-flying monster girls. It threw her down into the river where my water monster girls swam. My dragon-MILF spun in the air, looking for enemies.
Seeng died.
Ms. Trueno vanished beneath a chunk of rubble thrown by the giants on the far bank.
Hrudei died.
Zuby and Yesti died.
I was here. I focused on a flock of five seraphim that flew toward me without realizing their danger. I focused my will, the words to the spell I wanted rising out of the depths of my soul. Words birthed the universe.
They shaped everything.
“The power of the tide crushes, let the might of Lord Enki drown!”
Tidal Surge sent a massive wave of water sweeping across the sky. The seraphim shrieked and beat wings. Two of them vanished in the spell, the liquid snuffing out their burning wings and sweeping them from the sky. The others burned hot.
Waves of fire washed over me. I didn’t care. I was fire. Flamebody protected me as they attacked me. A wild laughter bubbled from my lips as I soared through the inferno unscathed. These bitches would pay for murdering my monster girls.
For killing the women I loved.
“Waves slam into the shore, let the strength of Lord Enki hammer!”
Water Mace slammed into a seraph’s face. Steam burst from the attack. She hurtled toward the ground, her face caved in. She vanished into motes before she even hit the ground. I had arrived. Lord Leo. They would all die for hurting my monster girls.
More stones rained around me. The frosty women climbed up on the roof. Waves of cold burst from them. Fire slammed down from above. Heads hurtled at me. All these monster girls wanted me dead.
It wouldn’t be long now. Siwang had to breach. How long would it take him to win?
Could he win against a builder with spells twice as powerful as anything Siwang knew?
Halia was with him. So was Hagza and Bellia. Three of my lovers were in danger. If they fell… I would have to do it. I would have to breach the Spire and rush through all those defenses. There would be no choice.
Magic burst from my lips.
Chapter Thirty
Munjan felt the pressure as he stepped off the teleport circle with Melin. The human, nearly Munjan’s own age, looked nervous. The pair crossed the teleport hub to reach another circle. Already, Munjan’s cockatrices, led by Vina, were engaging with the enemy. He had split his monster girls up to defend all three dungeons, putting one of his companions in charge of each.
Vina was a wild fighter. His maenad, a thunder monster girl, fought like a berserker.
“What’s the status,” Munjan asked Fara.
“There are eleven monster girls and one builder in the entrance room,” Fara answered.
“My thanks,” Munjan answered and nodded to Melin.
“Asud Gu!” Melin shouted, his voice cracking.
The light engulfed the two men, teleporting them from the hub to the entrance of Leo’s dungeon. The stairs leading up to the fight lay before him. He raced up as the first of his monster girls, a cockatrice named Mellekneva, died.
He felt her death. A wave of pride shot through him. She had fought well.
He exploded out into the entrance hall, a cave where his monster girls fought with hellhounds. Vina was in the midst of them. His maenad’s wild, black hair flew around her. She shrieked, her screams striking the monster girl she fought, making her flinch.
The other monster girl had bronze skin and flaming hair. She wielded fiery weapons that she slashed at Vina. The maenad dodged the attacks, trying to rip into the enemy monster girl with the claws on her fingers while her shrieks sent more pain into the enemy.
Across the cave, Munjan’s green-scaled cockatrices battled with the slender, black-skinned hellhounds. Rents of glowing red covered the enemy monster girls’ bodies as they leaped and wrestled. Shouts echoed through the room.
“A gout of flame, let the breath of Lord Gibil burn!”
At the far end of the cave, a pale-skinned and black-haired dungeon builder sent out a wave of fire. it swept over two of Munjan’s cockatrices, killing Mondata and Kikotesi. They vanished into motes, the hellhounds they fought charging deeper into the fray.
“Hammer concusses, let the might of Lord Ishkur deafen!” roared Munjan, his first spell cast in anger.
The Thunder Hammer slammed into one of those hellhounds and caved her head in. She hit the ground, lifeless.
“Sum Gidim!” Melin cried as he stepped up beside Munjan.
A scythe of spectral energy flashed out and killed the second hellhound leaping through the air. It passed through her body, not cutting her in half, just making her go limp before she vanished into sparkles, killed.
“Sum Gidim!” the mage chanted, his voice cracking, but his magic strong.
Another hellhound died.
“Whip and crack, let the lash of Lord Gibil strike!” the enemy dungeon builder shouted.
A Lash of Flame struck Munjan. Static Aura burst before the dungeon builder, protecting him from the attack. Munjan’s heart raced as he focused on the enemy. The words to the spell appeared in his mind.
Lightning Spear.
“Spark of lightning, crackle of electricity, let the wrath of Lord Enlil explode!” roared Munjan.
The spear of lightning hurtled across the battlefield for the enemy builder. He flinched, but one of his hellhounds barked and jumped before the attack. She took it, dying for him. He snarled and ducked behind a stalagmite rearing from the ground.
The battle was going wildly. Foneva and Ige died as Munjan grappled with what to do next. Suddenly, from the entrance of the tunnel, another ten hellhounds burst into the dungeon. A reserve force that the enemy held.
I split my forces up, but this man didn’t. Shit.
The ten rushed straight for Munjan and Melin.
“Lightning crackle and hiss, gird me in the love of Lady Uttu!” Munjan cried as the first hellhound leaped at him.
Static Aura crackled around him a moment before the hellhound struck the protective spell. Lightning sizzled around Munjan, throwing back the hellhound. She hit another, throwing off her attack before dying.
“Urudu Hum!” Melin cried.
A bar of steel struck a leaping hellhound in the face, crushing her skull and flinging her back into the fray. Cockatrices screamed, paralyzing two more of the attacking hellhounds. It was chaos out there. Vina roared.
The four-armed, flaming monster girl she fought burst into sparks. Vina, a burn on her side, charged at the crouching enemy dungeon builder. Her black hair waved behind her as she went for the kill. She had even more passion now than she had as a cheerleader.
“Whip and crack, let the lash of Lord Gibil strike!” the enemy builder cried.
The flaming whip struck Vina. Munjan’s cheerleader reeled back, flames engulfing her hair. She fell screaming to the floor, thrashing as she died. Anger boiled in Munjan as he focused on his enemy, trusting Melin’s magery to keep back the hellhounds.
“Hammer concusses, let the might of Lord Ishkur deafen!” cried Munjan.
Thunder Hammer slammed into the enemy builder. He staggered beneath the attack, swaying, looking concussed. But it didn’t kill him. Munjan opened his mouth to finish off his enemy when a hellhound hit him from the side.
Pain burst across Munjan’s arm as the hellhound tore into him with her sharp claws. She swept him off his feet. Heat bled from the cracks across her body, her eyes burning with rage. She ripped her teeth from his arm, blood dripping from her fangs.
He thrust out his other hand to block her while more of his cockatrices died. Szo. Nevmas. The battle raged as the monster girl tore at his hand. Munjan howled in pain. He had to focus. Cast a spell. Fear gripped him.
He failed.
“Urudu Ib-Ur!” Melin cried.
A metal shield appeared before him and blocked another hellhound from hitting him. Munjan was on his own. He had to save himself or he and all his monster girls would die. His harem of sexy cheerleaders would end before he had even collected the entire squad.
He would fail Leo. For the first time in Munjan’s life, someone trusted him. Believed in him. If he failed, the dungeon was undefended. It was more than Munjan in peril. It was everyone. They all rested on him.
He couldn’t be afraid.
The words rose to his mind.
“Sizzling touch, the spark of pain, let the prowess of Lord Enlil stun!” he snarled through the pain of the hellhound’s savaging, blood dripping on his face.
Lightning arced from his hand being bitten by the hellhound. Stunning Touch slammed into the hellhound, throwing her senseless to the side. It didn’t kill her, but knocked her unconscious. She would be out of the fight.
He hurt, his right hand mangled, skin ripped from his fingers. His left arm throbbed. He pushed himself up, gasping at the agony. He had never been this hurt in his life. But he had to keep fighting. He pushed himself up.
A hellhound leaped for him, snarling, “Lord Foc!”
Munjan didn’t have time to chant.
“Urudu Hum!”
A steel bar flew from Melin and crushed the hellhound’s neck. It snapped. Her body burst into sparks. Munjan grunted and staggered to his feet. Melin stood at his side. The mage was panting, as frightened as Munjan.
They were in this together.
“Whip and crack, let the lash of Lord Gibil strike!” roared the enemy builder on the far side of the cavern.
“Urudu Ib-Ur!” Melin cried as a whip of fire slashed for Munjan.
A metal shield appeared in the air and blocked the fire. Flames burst across it.
Munjan thrust out his hand and cried out, “Spark of lightning, crackle of electricity, let the wrath of Lord Enlil explode!”
The spear of lightning shot from his hand and struck the enemy dungeon builder. Lord Foc screamed out as the electricity coursed through him. He collapsed onto his back, his limbs twitching. His few hellhounds burst into motes, dying with him.
Power rushed into Munjan. His chest burned as he felt the new glyph searing into his skin. Fire. He had fire. He could cast the spell that Lord Foc had. The words for Flame Whip filled Munjan’s mind as he stood victorious.
Melin laughed.
Munjan joined the mage and hugged him. They had won. He had triumphed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Dungeon secure,” Munjan said in my mind.
There was no time for me to go back. I was too deep into the battle to withdraw. Garnet burst into sparks nearby. Fire engulfed Agubnamus. I was in the fight alone now. It was madness as I flew through the skies. The giants hurtled missiles at me. The dullahans hurtled their heads into the sky, deathly fire bursting like flack around me.
The griffins blurred through the sky as they sought to kill me. The first died to Static Aura. Others were burned as they hit my body. They tore at my armor, ripping through my defenses. But I had magic. I could take all of this. I could withstand every one of their attacks.
I had to kill them all.
There was no fleeing to my dungeon. They would just follow me. That would solve nothing. I had to survive and hope that Siwang could do it. All of our lives rested in his hands. His plan was the one that mattered.
His.
“Lightning arcs and sizzles, let the fury of Lord Enlil spread!”
Arching Chain shot out and struck a griffin. It burst from her and hit another then a third arced into a seraphim. All three monster girls fell dead.
From below, a dullahan head hurtled up at me, full of deathly energy that could kill me.
“Lightning flashes, let the passion of Lady Uttu fly!”
I teleported onto a nearby rooftop in a flash of lightning. The head burst overhead. I took a moment to gain my bearings. A blur hurtled down at me, one of the griffins had tracked me. She struck me in the back before I could react.
Her talons ripped through my armor and tore into my flame body.
Pain erupted. I staggered, the fire burning through me guttering for a moment. The protection was almost gone. The other monster girls saw me and rushed toward me. A stone crashed onto the roof near me, punching a hole through it.
I just had to survive.
A boulder crashed nearby and struck me. I gasped as it crushed my legs and pinned me down. I lay helpless as the griffin who just hurt me hurtled down at me. I seized upon a spell and chanted it through the pain.
“Lightning arcs and sizzles, let the fury of Lord Enlil spread!”
Chapter Thirty-One
Tuerien smiled.
“He’s injured,” reported Marana, a griffin he had just revived. She had been killed but he could send her back into the battle instantly. She flew so fast, leaving behind the seraphim that Leo had killed in his initial assault.
Leo had skill. Talent.
He was a fighter.
Marana died, failed by the wounded Leo. Tuerien gripped his Void Crystal, reaching into the Wind section of the interface and found Marana. He seized her soul and opened his mouth to revive her when he was hurtled out.
He gasped, his brain hurt by being flung from his Void Crystal. “What the fuck?”
The alarm in his dungeon went off. Invaders.
“How did he breach the Spire?” Tuerien demanded of Soulita?
The girlish figure perched on his Void Crystal shook her head. “I have no idea, but you are being invaded.”
“He must have prepared something. Ghosts, maybe. They could phase through the walls.” Tuerien shook his head. He was miles from that part of his dungeon. He’d have to divert some of his forces outside.
He left behind his Vault and hurried to his throne room where his map lay. He had to know where these enemies were so he could coordinate the attack. He raced through his living quarters and out into his throne room.
Only to find the enemy was here. Monster girls poured into his throne room from a hole in the wall. He gaped at the sight of lemures and ghosts, unicorns and cockatrices, sphinxes and choirs spilling like a flood into his dungeon. Three unique monster girls stepped out next. A wraith with a clock of mist, a one-eyed cyclops, and a lampetia who glowed with her element. Behind them came human and dwarven warriors. Even an elf.
“Lady Sherida, bless us with your light and help us smite your foe!” cried a black-haired woman in armor with a sword.
Light glowed throughout the adventurers, their weapons shining. At the back, a young man, Chinese, emerged last. He wore black robes. He folded his arms before him, his eyes focused on Tuerien.
Leo sent his pet builder? How the fuck did he breach my dungeon this deep?
“Flames consume, let the passion of Lady Lamashtu transform!” roared from Tuerien’s mind. He was not afraid of the horde of monster girls charging at him. Not when he had Ultimate magic. The Living Fire spell engulfed him.
It was a magic beyond Flamebody. Tuerien became a column of fire as the unicorns led the charge. They lowered their horns and plowed into his flames. They whinnied and screamed as their bodies burned to ash.
He laughed as he felt them burning. He consumed them with his magic. His body destroyed them. He felt their skin crisp and blacken. Their hair burst into ash. He savored their pain, reveling in the destruction of his enemies.
More monster girls charged. Beams of light fired from the lampetia. The cockatrices screamed.
How could that hurt living fire?
“Death slays, let the finality of Lord Nergal despoil!” Tuerien roared, his flames crackling as he cast Blight.
The most powerful Death spell.
A wave of deathly energy swept out before him and killed the choirs, cockatrices, and sphinxes.
The black-haired woman who had prayed raised her shield. The deathly wave struck her, but she didn’t die. The light engulfed her and swallowed it before it hurt her. She lowered her shield, her eyes hard on him. Lightning crackled from the blade she held.
“Halia,” Tuerien said. Leo’s famed paladin. The daughter of the hero who slew some of the most deadly dungeon builders.
“Lady Sherida, let your light shine bright from me to aid your servants and harm our enemies!” Halia prayed.
The light flared bright from her. She shone with faith. Tuerien growled. However, he saw it as a column of flame flinched from it. He was momentarily blinded. But that didn’t matter. They had no water monster girls.
He had no fear of them. There was nothing more they could do. Halia marched toward him, resolute.
Tuerien laughed. He didn’t even have to use spells to kill her. He just had to engulf her in his body. Leo’s paladin. His lover, so the rumors reported. Pleasure rippled through Tuerien. Leo had caused him so many headaches.
Now he would hurt the bastard before destroying him. That hole in the wall must lead into a dungeon. Siwang’s or Leo’s. Either way, he could get access to it. Send his monster girls into it. He would destroy all of them.
“Thunderclap deafens, let the roar of Lord Ishkur disorient!” Siwang cried at the back.
Concussive Burst slammed into Tuerien’s column of fire. His flames danced and leaped. They recoiled from it, starting to gutter out. Shock rippled through Tuerien. The spell hadn’t hurt him, but it was putting out the fire.
“Thunderclap deafens, let the roar of Lord Ishkur disorient!” Siwang roared again.
The flames nearly snuffed out. As they did, Halia charged him. She slashed her sword through his fiery body. He felt that blade. There was something about how it was constructed that hurt him. He had to kill her.
“Metal missiles fly, let the spikes of Lord Nabu pierce!” crackled Tuerien.
Volley of Stakes, an Expert Magic spell, hurtled down at Halia. A dozen metal shards that should rip through her body. She held her sword before her. Lightning crackled from it and light flashed, vaporizing most of the stakes.
One struck her in the chest, ripping through her golden armor. She gasped in pain as the attack threw her back. She hit the ground, rolling. Blood spilled from her wound torn through her. She lay on her belly, quivering.
Dead or dying.
Tuerien turned his attention to the dungeon builder.
“Thunderclap deafens, let the roar of Lord Ishkur disorient!” Siwang shouted.
“Metal missiles fly, let the spikes of Lord Nabu pierce!” roared Tuerien.
The concussive blast struck his body. His spell nearly failed. It barely held on, but all those stakes hurtled at Siwang. The dungeon builder didn’t have any protective magics. But the dwarven mage charged at Siwang, hurtling at him.
“Na-Nir Uzu!” the dwarf shouted.
She knocked Siwang to the ground, covering him. The stakes struck her. Metal rang. Her entire body had become covered in armor. It protected her as she lay on Siwang. Tuerien cursed. On the ground, the cyclops and the lampetia rushed forward.
The cyclops raised her hammer and hit his flames.
The fire burst out. He was back to his human form. He ducked a beam of light fired at him by the lampetia. It was time to end this. Hoarfrost. It would fill the area with frost so cold, every living creature in the throne room would be frozen by Tuerien.
“The cruelty of ice, let—”
“She’s at my core!” the Soulita cried in horror. “The wraith!”
Terror the likes of which Tuerien had never felt engulfed him. He stared at Siwang. He had to finish off the upstart now. He focused on him with Aural Assault, the Ultimate Thunder spell. He—
Pain burst Tuerien’s heart. A hand clenched it. He screamed in agony as his heart shattered. In his final moments, he felt his Void Crystal break. He had failed to protect Soulita, bested by a junior dungeon builder and his pathetic wraith.
Tuerien Ironbane died.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tuerien dropped.
Power surged into Siwang. A flood of energy. More than he had ever felt flooded through him.
His first foe slain.
He shuddered and let out such a huge sigh of relief. Pain burned across his chest as he gained new runes. Fire, Metal, Ice, and Wind. He felt so much stronger now. Most of his monster girls had died, slain by the powerful magic.
Hagza lay on him, her armor heavy. It was a huge gamble to do this. He had lied to Leo when he said it was too late. It had almost been too late. Even knowing that Tuerien had Level 4 Monster Girls, Siwang had kept the dwarven miners digging. He had to end this. He had a plan.
It worked.
He had his mother go through the floor. She could become in
corporeal when she wanted. As the rest of Siwang’s force distracted the enemy, his wraith had infiltrated the Vault and destroyed the Void Crystal. It didn’t matter that Siwang couldn’t beat Tuerien in a fair fight.
This was war. Nothing about it should be fair.
“Fractured stone,” grunted Sarkz. “That was terrifying.”
“Never seen a dungeon builder turn into flames before,” said Ashiliozia.
“Halia’s prayer,” Vern said. “Halia’s prayer… That spell should have killed us all.”
“Yeah,” said Hagza as she rolled off Siwang. “Halia!”
Siwang trembled as Hagza rushed away from him. He pushed himself up, trembling. The excitement bled out of him. He had survived. He had lived. His monster girls were alive, too. They had all made it through.
All but…
Halia lay on her side, bleeding. Fear rushed through Siwang. He had gained new glyphs, but none of them were Life. He could not heal her wounds. Hagza didn’t know life magic, either. The dwarven mage picked up Halia’s limp body.
Blood dripped down her dangling arm, her hand still clutching Stormlight.
Hagza burst into a sprint, rushing for the hole the miners had carved from Leo’s dungeon into this one. Siwang raced behind her, scrolling through the spells he had gained. None of them would help them travel faster.
None of them.
“Leo, Halia is in peril!” Siwang shouted.
