Chapter Forty-Nine
I came awake, groaning.
I was sore from sleeping on top of a jungle-clad mountain. I sat up, peering to the east. The volcano rose above the other mountains. I would reach it sometime today. Not quite two full days of travel.
I groaned and rose, casting Revitalize with a muttered chant, “Life energizes and enervates, let the grace of Lady Ianna empower.”
The pain from sleeping on such a hard surface faded away. I stretched my back and opened up the pack. Mom had left me with supplies. I cooked some bacon and fried some toast on a skillet. I made the fire last night with magic.
After eating, I marked the spot for the dragons to find, sending, “I should reach the volcano today. Stand by on my campsite.”
“We shall, my Lord,” Agubnamus said.
I nodded and cast two spells.
“Gentle winds, let the support of Lady Tiamat billow. Light can bend, let the lie of Lady Sherida hide.”
With Fly and Bent Light on me, I took off invisible into the air. I soared toward the volcano, fear thick around my heart. The jungle-clad mountains passed by me below as the large cone grew larger and larger. It wasn’t like Mount Rainier—it wasn’t tall enough to have glaciers on it—but it was still impressive. Maybe like a volcano on Hawaii.
Like Mauna Loa.
Smoke drifted from the top of it, implying it was active. My stomach churned as I soared closer and closer. The sun climbed higher and higher, reaching its zenith. Heat rose up from the jungle below. It was hot here.
Damned hot.
I landed to eat lunch. I would need energy today. I devoured the dried meat I had and washed it down with delicious water I found on the mountain. I used the Purify Water ritual, expert level, to make sure it was drinkable.
In another hour or two, I would be there. I flew slowly toward the volcano. I wanted to survey it. I swung out over the jungle, letting me see more of the southern slope. The jungle climbed up the mountain. Near where it thinned, a temple was built. An impressive structure carved out of basalt.
It seemed to lead into the mountain. Steam rose out of the upper windows. I scanned for any sign of worshipers. The place looked abandoned. A trail led into the jungle. At the base, I spotted an elvish community built in the trees.
It had to be a few hours’ hike to reach the temple.
My heart beat with excitement. If I crushed the Ice Saint, I just might claim the Blessed Blade. One of my dragons could carry it for me. I might even have to tame an ancient fire dragon. God, was she working with a dragon?
That would complicate things. The Wind Saint proved that they have power over the dragons shackled to the Gods. Of course, the Wind Saint had power over a Wind dragon. Would an Ice Saint have power over a Fire dragon?
I had not defeated the Fire Saint.
I hated that I didn’t know what was going to happen. Everyone was right. I should just abandon Nilli to her fate. That was the smart thing to do. The practical thing. The easy way which would ensure my eventual victory.
But it wasn’t the right way.
“I have arrived,” I sent to my women, trembling with fear and excitement. “Agubnamus?”
“We are at your campsite,” she said. That was six hours of flying at my speed away. They could cover it faster, but…
Did it really matter?
No. I was on my own.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Halia hated it. She could feel that bastard out there. Todlicht was doing something. Morana’s coma was no accident. His hand was behind it, but why? When would he come again? She had to be ready. The sun was rising. It was a Saturday.
The morning air was cool. Dew on the ground.
Halia didn’t care. She sat on a bench on the back porch, rubbing at her pussy as she faced the rising sun. Its warmth banished the chill in the air. She groaned, her fingers plunging in and out of her cunt. She had to awaken another of his women.
That thought filled her mind as her fingers frantically plunged in and out of her cunt. She shuddered at how good it felt. She licked her lips, savoring that wonderful moment. Her digits plundered her cunt over and over again.
“Mmm,” she groaned, her face contorting in delight. “Oh, oh, just like that! Lady Sherida!”
She loved the feel of the sun on her breasts and pussy as she masturbated. Her orgasm swelled fast. She knew another of Leo’s women would come to her. She thrust her digits fast in and out of her cunt. She stirred herself up.
“Send her to me, Lady Sherida!” Halia gasped, the heel of her hand grinding on her clit. “Yes!”
Sparks sizzled.
Halia came.
The paladin bucked on the bench, her pussy juices gushing out. Stars flashed across her vision. The sliding glass door opened as she trembled through her orgasm. Her boobs bounced and heaved as Crystal stepped out of the house naked.
“My, my,” Crystal said. “I guess it’s my turn.”
“Yes, yes, yes,” gasped Halia. “Lady Sherida wishes to bless you with the power of Ice.”
“Good, good,” cooed Crystal. She sauntered forward, her shaved pussy dripping. “But aren’t you a naughty thing?”
“Naughty?” whimpered Halia. “I don’t understand.”
“Out here masturbating day after day.” Crystal sat on the bench beside Halia and patted her own lap. “You need to be punished, dirty girl.”
Halia pulled her fingers out of her pussy and shuddered. She hadn’t expected this, but…
Crystal did like to play the dominatrix with Lord Leo. He humored her at times, but he would take charge when it mattered. Halia’s pussy clenched as she found herself wanting to humor Crystal right now. So Halia crawled over the girl’s lap.
Halia’s heavy boobs rubbed against the wood of the bench and the warmth of Crystal’s thigh. The girl placed her hand on Halia’s rump, stroking over it. A shiver ran through Halia at the touch. She breathed in slowly.
“Mmm, yes, yes, that’s a pert little ass,” cooed Crystal. “I just have to… do this.”
SMACK!
The stinging impact made Halia jump. Her nipples rasped across the wood of the bench. The heat soaked into her pussy. It was strange but exciting. The paladin groaned, the sunlight bathing them both. It felt so good on her skin.
“Mmm, such a naughty little paladin,” purred Crystal.
SMACK!
Halia gasped and jumped again.
“Out here masturbating day after day.”
SMACK!
“Being a delicious little whore!”
SMACK!
Halia shuddered, the heat melting through her rump to her pussy. The stinging pain hurt, but she could endure it. She was the daughter of Anguin. He slew Argian the White and Thunder Hammer Gludhug. He wielded the Blessed Blade of Light.
She was just as tough.
SMACK!
She gasped, savoring that heat.
SMACK!
“You’ve been so naughty, haven’t you?” cooed Crystal.
“So naughty,” groaned Halia.
SMACK!
“Yes, yes, just a bad, bad paladin,” she moaned, her pussy dripping wet.
“I bet your cunt’s on fire,” Crystal said, her hand sliding over Halia’s burning rump to slide through her bush and cup her pussy. “Yes, yes, just on fire.”
“I blaze with Lady Sherida’s Light!” Halia cried out. “You need to touch it.”
“Do I?” Crystal pulled her hand from Halia’s rump. “Mmm, let’s find out!”
SMACK!
The stinging impact had the paladin shivering. Then she was being pushed off Crystal’s lap. She sank to the ground. Crystal motioned for her to stand. She did, facing the sunlight. The rising sun spilled over her heaving tits.
The black-haired girl knelt before Halia and cupped her pussy. The girl rubbed at the paladin’s snatch, rustling through her thick bush. Pleasure spilled through Halia. Crystal leaned forward, nuzzling through Halia’s pubic hair to find her clit.
She licked.
Halia moaned.
The naughty girl lapped at Halia’s clit while she shoved two fingers into Halia’s pussy. Those digits felt wonderful in the paladin’s cunt. She closed her eyes, bathing in the glow of Lady Sherida’s sun while those digits pumped away.
The pleasure washed through Halia. Her reddened ass clenched. She shook her head as those two digits churned up her dripping pussy. Crystal’s tongue kept fluttering against Halia’s clit, sending sparks sizzling through her cunt.
“Mmm, and then there were three,” cooed Crystal.
A third finger plunged into Halia’s pussy. She shuddered, savoring how it stretched her out. She enjoyed that digit working in and out of her cunt. Her pussy clamped down on it, savoring how Crystal pumped it in and out of her.
It was a wonderful moment to have that trio of digits churning up Halia’s pussy. She gripped her big boobs, kneading them. Crystal’s tongue fluttered against Halia’s clit, stroking over that sensitive bud as those three fingers became four.
“Oh, yes,” gasped Halia, the four fingers stretching her out. “You’re not?”
“I am,” Crystal purred, working those four digits in and out of Halia’s cunt. “You want it, naughty slut!”
“I do!”
Halia’s fingers slid up to her nipples as those four digits plunged into her pussy. She twisted her nubs, pinching them. Pleasure shot to her as Crystal started balling her fingers up inside of Halia’s tight cunt.
Crystal made a fist and pushed it deep into Halia’s pussy.
“Lady Sherida!” the paladin gasped as the girl fisted her pussy.
“Mmm, this is so hot,” Crystal moaned and suckled on Halia’s clit.
The paladin’s orgasm swelled fast as that fist plunged in and out of her cunt. She groaned, her entire body trembling. Her fingers twisted her nipples as the hand buried into her pussy over and over again.
Crystal’s hand sank past her wrist, her knuckles massaging the walls of Halia’s pussy. The pleasure swelled through the paladin. The naughty tongue stroked her clit as she twisted her own nipples. The fist plunged deep into her pussy then pulled back.
“I’m so close,” Halia moaned as Crystal fisted her. “Oh, oh, that’s so good!”
“Mmm,” Crystal moaned, pumping her fist in and out of the paladin’s pussy. “Cum!”
Halia whimpered, facing the rising sun. The warmth of Lady Sherida’s light spilled over Halia’s heaving breasts. Her pussy clamped down on Crystal’s fist, plunging in and out of her pussy. Her entire body trembled. She could feel her orgasm building and building.
Along with the magic.
Halia closed her eyes, letting the morning sunlight bathe her body. Energize her soul. Her pussy clamped down on that wonderful fist. The knuckles massaged the top of her cunt, hitting this special spot that sent pleasure sweeping through her.
“Lady Sherida!” Halia howled as she exploded.
Her pussy spasmed around Crystal’s fist, pussy cream gushing out around the girl’s wrist and spilling down her arm. Crystal gasped as she felt more than the paladin’s snatch spasming around her hand. She felt power flooding into her.
Halia trembled there, her heart pounding in her chest. She swayed there, loving this moment. It felt so good to her. She quivered in delight as the pleasure surged down through her body. Her cunt rippled around the girl’s hand as the magic awakened Crystal’s soul.
“Yes!” Crystal gasped and ripped her hand out of Halia’s cunt. “Oh, oh, I feel it!”
“Good,” whimpered Halia as she trembled there. She was dizzy with this pleasure. “Thank you, Lady Sherida!”
Her orgasm peaked, the sunlight warm on her breasts until it was suddenly cut off. Halia gasped, seeing a passing cloud before it. She panted, her pleasure fading away. Crystal trembled and rose, her eyes smoldering as she headed inside.
“That dirty boy is going to take care of me,” Crystal declared.
Halia just nodded, shivering there. The darkness was coming soon.
Chapter Fifty
Auniasiiriliiania smiled as the elves she brought with her bound the dungeon builder. He screamed as they worked, but he didn’t cast any spells.
“I cut out his tongue,” said the Fire Saint. Her body rippled with her flames. Lord Gibil’s servant was bewildering to watch. “He won’t be a problem.”
“Thank you, Lady Saint,” Auniasiiriliiania said, bowing to the burning elf. It had shocked Auniasiiriliiania when she had been contacted. It also heartened her to know that the Gods were on the side of the Company.
“Your work is impressive,” said the Fire Saint. “To collar such evil.” She smiled. “Now, Leo the False is about to fall into our net. If he survives, you will be in a position to deliver the death knell. If not, between your two powerful builders, you shall eradicate the rest from this world.”
Auniasiiriliiania shuddered. “That will be a glorious day.”
The Fire Saint nodded and vanished.
The other elves, rangers all, paused in their work.
“Hurry,” Auniasiiriliiania said. “If one of Fuegin patrols finds us before we take him to the backup, then we will have failed and Lord Gibil’s gift will be for naught.”
The rangers nodded and finished binding the builder. He would sleep for eternity with the other eleven, providing the power to the magic circle that would turn Fuegin into the slave of the elven nation.
He would be gripped by a powerful binding collar. One even stronger than Barany.
The gods are with us, thought Auniasiiriliiania. We cannot fail.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Follow the path up the mountain to the cave, Leo,” it read. Nothing else.
I found the path, flying up it until the mouth of the cave appeared. A ruddy glow spilled out of it. I stared at it. This was it. I fought against my panic. I had to prepare for what I would face in there. I sucked in a deep breath.
I buffed myself.
“Strong and unyielding, let the granite of Lady Ki enhance!”
Strength of Earth came from Lady Ki. I had her blessing. She slept in my vault.
“Steel wards with unyielding strength, let the defense of Lady Nisaba protect!”
Metalcoat armored me in Lady Nisaba’s blessing. I would need the love of all the Ladies I had liberated and loved.
“Life energizes and enervates, let the grace of Lady Ianna empower!”
Revitalize empowered my body with Lady Ianna’s blessing. She had also given me a child with Bellia.
“In the night all is hidden, let the love of Lady Ninazu hide!”
Hide Power would make it harder to detect me. I rarely used it, but I didn’t know what powers the Saints had. Plus, I wanted to have Lady Ninazu’s blessing.
“Lightning crackle and hiss, gird me in the love of Lady Uttu!”
Static Aura. My first defensive spell. I hoped to have Lady Uttu once this was over.
“Incarnation of flames, let the passion of Lady Lamashtu embrace!”
Flamebody transformed me into a being of fire. I would claim the Blessed Blade of Fire from the temple later and gain Lady Lamashtu’s blessing.
“Stone and flesh become one, let the love of Lady Ki meld!”
I cast Stonemeld just in case I had to merge into stones.
“Flesh to steel, let the gift of Lady Nisaba transmute!”
Steel Body was a powerful spell that turned my body into steel with fire burning in him.
I landed before the entrance to the cave and moved to the side, still invisible. I found a stone and sat on it. I had one more spell to cast. I closed my eyes slowly, my heart thundering a mile a minute. This was it.
“Mirror and reflect, let the brilliance of Lady Sherida copy,” I whispered.
I cast Illusory Doppelganger. Lady Sherida blessed me with an illusory duplicate I could puppeteer. I rose to my feet. The doppelganger was invisible as I was. I moved it down the tunnel of the cave. It wound back and forth.
“I am heading into the cave,” I sent to my women. “And, yes, I am using Illusory Doppelganger.”
“Of course you are,” Maya sent.
“You’re not an idiot,” Crystal added.
“This is so dumb,” Nina Naughty said.
“Save her,” Lana Fulmine whispered.
“Come back to us,” Mom added.
“That’s right, big bro!” squealed Garnet.
“Be safe,” Ms. Trueno sent with her love.
“And careful,” Hagane said. “This is their territory. They have prepared a trap. Be ready for anything.”
“I have every buff on me,” I said. “Even Hide Power.”
“He’s doing it smartly,” Terra said, like she was begging for me to be safe.
“You shall prevail, Dark Lord,” Morana said.
I felt their love as I moved down the tunnel. It led deeper into the mountain, the ruddy glowing growing brighter. Then it opened onto a large cave. Beyond, a pool of magma bubbled. Before it lay Nilli naked and alone on a bed of obsidian. She was missing her hand, the stump bandaged.
Guilt swept through me as I looked around.
“No one is here,” I sent. “I found—”
An attack struck my real body. Static Aura discharged. Then a second ripped through my metal armor. A third and fourth attack hit my steel flesh. My body rang as I opened my eyes, abandoning the Illusory Doppelganger.
I walked right into the trap.
I stood from the stone, Bent Light ruined by the attack. I was exposed. My armor was trashed by the attacks, but Steel Body had protected me. It was a more powerful spell than Granite Flesh. I stared at the slope and found not one Saint.
Not two.
But four.
The Ice Saint, a dwarf, stood there made of glacier blue and spilling mist down her body. With her was an elf made of flames, a halfling made of polished steel, and another elf made of crackling lightning. My heart lurched.
“I’m under attack by four saints!” I sent to everyone, including my dragons. “Ice, Fire, Metal, and Lightning. Dragons, fly!”
“We come,” Agubnamus said as the Saints’ attacks rushed at me.
Chapter Fifty-One
Four? Smerta thought. The valkyrie found herself forming an icy sword before she realized it, fear crushing down on her heart. She stood in her guard post. From here, she commanded the defenses of Leo’s dungeon. Most days, she stood as still as a statue, able to sort of let time pass in a trance, waiting for when she was needed.
“Fuck a bear,” she muttered aloud.
The alarm blared.
An intruder in the dungeon? She shot eyes down to the map. Four red dots appeared in the main entrance. They surged into the first trap room. For the last week, that had been the Stone Teeth Room. Leo rotated them daily normally, but he had been too distracted and had now left the dungeon entirely. This was the oread’s room, guarded by Dongara, Apsara, and Spaika.
Their dots were blue. One appeared before a red dot and winked out at once.
Spaika died.
“Four Saints!” Apsara cried out before her blue dot winked out.
Then Dongara’s dot vanished, all three wiped out in heartbeats. The red dots moved through the room to enter the First Labyrinth.
“Fuck a bear!” Smerta snarled and sent out to everyone but Leo. “Four saints have penetrated the dungeon.”
“That’s not good,” Alizee gasped.
“No fucking shit!” Crystal spat. “Which ones?”
“Unknown,” Smerta answered. “They’re moving into the labyrinth. We’ll have to wait for monster girls to live long enough to report on them.”
“They are Death, Thunder, Life, and Earth,” said Hagane, her voice too calm.
“How do you know that?” Lana Fulmine demanded.
“They’re the only ones left,” said Nina Naughty. “Fire, Metal, Lightning, and Ice are fighting Leo. Darkness, Light, Water, and Wind are dead. That’s Eight Saints accounted for.”
“We’re so fucked,” Terra groaned.
“Good thing you have two builders with Level 3 Magics,” said Siwang. “I will go for Life. Munjan?”
“Thunder,” he said. “Guide us to those two, Smerta. Or are they sticking together?”
Smerta glanced down at the map. Blue dots were winking out as the saints slaughtered wildhounds, satyrs, and oozes that patrolled the Initial Labyrinth. From there, they would soon enter the Lightning Pillar Room and the Second Labyrinth.
Vilkas passed before Smerta, the raiju in her lightning wolf form. She crackled with energy.
“They’re splitting up as they search the Labyrinth,” Smerta reported. “They’ll soon find the Lightning Pillar Room. I imagine they’ll split up once they clear through it again. The Second Labyrinth is much larger.”
“And how do we handle the other two?” asked Mrs. Lucina.
“We’ll guard the throne room with your ex-husband,” said Nina Naughty. “Buy time for Munjan and Siwang. Figure out which is which.”
The concealed door into the Guard Post opened, and Bellia entered. Smerta was surprised to see the paladin in here. She wore her wooden armor and her sword, looking fierce. She had changed so much. Smerta frowned.
“I will kill Death,” she announced. “I am Life’s champion. I have Leo’s life growing in my womb. I am blessed by Lady Ianna. Death shall not prevail over me.”
“Leo’s going to kill me for this,” Smerta said and nodded. “Bellia will handle Death. All monster girls, flood into the Second Labyrinth. We must slow down the Saints. Keep them separated so they can be taken down one at a time.”
Smerta stared at the map. The monster girls were moving. So were the other dungeon builders. Leo was in a fight for his life against four of them, and if he won, he would still lose if they did not prevail here. But monster girls couldn’t defeat the Saints.
It took builders to kill them.
The first saint found the Lightning Pillar Room and moved through it, unfazed by the defenses. Smerta shuddered as the Saints penetrated into the Second Labyrinth. A large maze, full of trap rooms. The monster girls were moving. The saints might even find this room. It was in the heart of the Second Labyrinth, hidden with skill, but…
Bellia stared at the map with Smerta. They had to figure out which one was which and strike. Leo wasn’t here to move the dungeon around. Siwang and Munjan were moving fast. The mages would use the teleport circles to skip them around the dungeon.
Smerta would defend the dungeon. She would not disappoint Leo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Lightning flashes, let the passion of Lady Uttu fly!”
I cast Electric Jump to teleport clear of the four saints, appearing down the mountainside a good half mile. I had to regroup. I opened my mouth to start casting defensive spells when the four Saints appeared before me.
Ice shot at me, gleaming in the sunlight.
“Strong and durable, let the strength of Lord Nabu shield!”
A metal shield appeared before me, blocking the blow. Ice shattered against it.
Fire exploded around my body a heartbeat later, heating my steel body. I had Flamebody, though, so I ignored the fire. It wasn’t the problem. The lightning arching at me was. The Saints were attacking me from all sides.
“Lightning flashes, let the passion of Lady Uttu fly!”
I shot up the slope again, appearing in a burst of lightning only for the Metal Saint to pop into existence beside me, swinging a massive sword that was easily twice the halfling’s height. She grinned at me as I twisted out of the way.
Only the sword bent and flowed anyway, hitting me in the side. My steel body rang like a gong. I cursed as I turned to face Metal. That meant I had to use Ice. The words to the Ultimate Ice spell, Hoarfrost, rose in my mind.
At the same time, I felt monster girls dying. My oreads were dead.
I couldn’t let that distract me as I shouted, “The cruelty of ice, let the freezing might of Lord Anshar spread!”
The area before me was covered in a thick layer of frost that engulfed the Metal Saint. She snarled in pain as the cold sapped her steel body. Cracks formed around the joints as she jumped back, the cold making her brittle.
Ice and Metal as opposites still made no sense.
Fire exploded around me again, consuming my clothes. They burned around me as I whirled, only for lightning to slam into the next. I screamed as the electricity coursed through my steel body. My own metal was cracking beneath it, flames bursting out of the rents.
Metal launched herself at me.
“Winds swirl, let the rage of Lord Anu rampage!”
I unleashed Twister at her. The whirlwind slammed into the Metal Saint. For a moment, she vanished in the torrent of wind. I expected to see her go flying, but she burst out the other end, not affected at all by the powerful winds. She slammed her sword into my head.
Steel Body shattered as the blow threw me onto my back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Go left,” Smerta shouted.
With Siwang were all his companions. His monster girls. He was not going into this fight alone. He had the best with him. He raced through Leo’s massive dungeon. Siwang did not realize just how extensive Leo had built.
He had trap rooms. Several different mazes.
I never had to face adventurers breaking into my dungeon all the time, Siwang realized. Leo had built most of this extensive dungeon before Siwang had even entered the world.
Now, Siwang had to guard it for Leo. His friend had entrusted him with this task. He would not fail. Another right led him to a door. He grabbed it and entered a room full of vegetation. It was thick with green life. So much, it was choking. He couldn’t see.
“This is the Overgrown Room,” Smerta announced. “The quetzalcoatl and unicorns that guard it are already dead. The saint is in the middle of the room.”
Siwang nodded, ready to unleash deathly magics against the Life Saint.
“Xiongbu, Lei, Jinzi, Shandian, and Baoshi, guard me,” he told his monster girls. “Everyone else, spread out.”
They nodded and flowed out into the dungeon. Guang moved ahead, muting her light glow as much as possible. Caihong took to the air to fly over the vegetation. There was space below the ceiling. Yinfu pressed forward, ready to become a whirl of fire. Muyang bounded on her hoofs, swords of ice in both hands. Shui slid through vegetation, condensing water to swirl around her from the mist drifting through the warm room. The plants moved out of Aunt Tao’s way as she strode forward. Jinu flowed through the shadows, moving into the gloom.
The others closed around him, Lei in her shiny armor, her hammer in hand. Mother was close, her mist spilling down her back. Jinzi held her chains of gold, ready to attack, while Shandian’s wings crackled with lightning. The garnet in Baoshi’s forehead sparkled, ready to fire a beam of light.
Siwang moved forward, engulfed in protective spells. Leo had taught him how to fight.
“Keep going forward,” Smerta said. “You’re nearing her.”
The vegetation came alive around them. Caihong shouted, her voice echoing above. Then her cries went silent. The connection vanished. She died. Siwang breathed slowly. He expected to take monster girl casualties here.
He was facing a saint.
Light flashed, Guang firing her beams. Vegetation hissed before she screamed and died. So did Tao and Jinu. Fear slammed into Siwang at how fast his monster girls were dying. He stared around him at the vegetation.
“Where is she?” demanded Siwang.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“The Thunder Saint is in the Stalactite Room,” Smerta told Munjan as he rushed through the labyrinth. “Go right. The door at the end is the exit. Wait, she went down the decoy hallway. She’ll realize it dead ends pretty fast.”
“Good,” Munjan thought and ran with his cheerleaders. He had the full squad with him.
Macka, Andea, Vina, Senka, Plamena, Talasa, Noca, Sjanja, Ordaziti, Mirisi, Dijamanta, and Jaje rushed with him to the door. He wrenched it open. Vina charged through first, followed by Plamena and her four burning swords. Macka hissed and leaped through, followed by Ordaziti in her icy armor. Munjan followed into the room. It had thick stalactites bristling across the ceiling that would fall on the intruders.
A line of broken ones marked the Saint’s progress through the room to the decoy door.
“We’ll ambush her coming out of there,” Munjan whispered.
His monster girls nodded. They rushed across the room, those that could fly winging in the air. Munjan ran with them. They formed an arc before the door, ready to attack. He stood off to the right, readying his spells.
“She’s coming back,” Smerta said. “Good positioning. Destroy her.”
“Wish Melin was here,” he said as his heart pounded in his chest.
“Your bromance is so cute,” Macka said, lightning arching between her two tails.
“Focus,” Andea said as she flew over the room.
“She’s at the door. Get ready,” said Smerta.
The door opened, and a short figure made of a strange distortion appeared. The figure was hard to make out, seemingly formed of waves rebounding back and forth in the vague shape of a person. The Thunder Saint.
His monster girls attacked.
Macka fired her lightning, Andea blasted light from her halo, and Vina charged forward with a mad hiss while Plamena followed, her swords out. Water exploded from Talasa’s mouth, Jaje’s toes grew roots that rushed across the ground to bind the Saint, and Dijamanta threw stone javelins. Senka darted forward, invisible, but Munjan could still see her. Mirisi fired her paralyzing stingers from her scorpion tail, Noca threw a net of shadows, Sjanja charged forward with a wicked sword in hand, and Ordaziti rushed in with an icy blade raised high.
A screeching sound erupted from the Thunder Saint. A terrible sound that slammed into Munjan, nearly crushing his heart, but he resisted it thanks to Static Aura discharging. His monster girls all screamed as the attack vibrated their bodies.
They burst into motes of light. Macka, Andea, Senka, Plamena, Talasa, Noca, Sjanja, Ordaziti, Mirisi, Dijamanta, and Jaje all vanished as their attacks slammed into the saint. Water and stone and light hit her, bouncing off the vibrating figure. Lightning hit the Saint. She stumbled from the attack.
Only Vina still lived, hissing with her rage. She landed on the Thunder Saint, screeching at her, holding her in place. Fear washed through Munjan. His entire squad, save for Vina, was wiped out in a single attack.
The words for Arcing Lightning rose in his soul.
“Lightning arcs and sizzles, let the fury of Lord Enlil spread!”
The lightning shot at her. The distortion vanished. Vina fell to the ground, landing on her belly. Munjan’s spell hit the stone but didn’t bounce toward the Thunder Saint. If the spell hit a living creature, a valid target, it would arc to another.
“Shit,” he snarled and turned to focus on her.
A blast of sound hit him. He groaned against it, his metal armor he wore crumpling beneath the attack. His protective magic held. He was brimming with enhancement spells, his body made of fire beneath the ruined protection.
“Lightning arcs and sizzles, let the fury of Lord Enlil spread!”
She vanished again before the attack hit her. From behind, the sound struck Munjan. He gasped, staggering beneath it. The noise pressed into his mind. His flaming body rippled and compressed beneath the awful attack.
“Munjan!” Vina screamed.
Chapter Fifty-Two
Flamebody went out.
My protective spells were fading. Another blast of fire rushed at me.
“Flames consume, let the passion of Lady Lamashtu transform!”
I cast Living Flame and became more than just a body of fire. I became fire. It swirled around me. The flames hit me and only made me stronger. I was invigorated by them. I would not be stopped by the fiery elf.
I could ignore her. I had to concentrate—
Lightning slammed into me from behind. The pain burst through me. My fire rippled but held. It was a powerful spell. It could take some damage. I shifted my awareness around. I didn’t really have a front or back. I found the lightning saint.
He vanished.
“Graven wounds pulse in pain, let the healing of Lord Dumazid flow!”
I mended the wounds I had taken. My flames grew hotter. The Ice Saint appeared, firing ice.
“Lightning flashes, let the passion of Lady Uttu fly!”
I teleported again. So did they. They were all about me. I had to focus them down. I had to kill them. I fixed my gaze on the Lightning Saint. He aimed his hand at me to discharge another blast of painful electricity.
“Thunder bursts, let the passion of Lord Ishkur explode!”
Aural Assault screeched from me and crashed into the Lightning Saint. The elf’s electrical body rippled and convulsed. Jolts of power shot from the Saint and into the stones. He staggered back, the golden energy dimming in intensity.
I opened my mouth, but Lightning vanished.
Fire engulfed me, followed by shards of ice that ripped into my flames. They spurted. I spun around to find Metal slamming her sword through my fiery flesh. I snarled as the steel of her blade stole the heat from my body. Pain swept through me.
“The cruelty of ice, let the freezing might of Lord Anshar spread!”
Hoarfrost engulfed Metal. Her body cracked more as the halfling staggered back. My flames sputtered as Metal vanished. Lightning struck me from behind. I shifted my awareness, searching for him only to have ice slam into my fire. Steam hissed.
My flames were running out. I crackled and focused on a distant outcropping of volcanic stone.
“Lightning flashes, let the passion of Lady Uttu fly!”
I appeared there only to find a spray of liquid metal that hurtled down at me. The mercury crashed into my fire and drove me down to the ground. Metal emerged from my body, glowing and spilling across the rocks. I was in trouble. Ice flew at me. Another blast of lightning.
I felt the stone beneath me and flowed into it with Stone Meld.
I was glad I had cast that spell. I was safe for the moment. The ground shook with distant impacts. I couldn’t stay down here forever, though. They would kill Nilli if they thought I was retreating. I had to be ready. I moved through the earth, feeling small vibrations.
The Saints.
I popped up behind one. The Lightning Saint searched for me.
The Metal Saint shouted as I cried out, “Thunder bursts, let the passion of Lord Ishkur explode!”
As Lightning turned, Aural Assault struck his crackling body. The sound threw the Saint back. He hit the ground, rolling. His body hissed and spat electricity. He snarled in pain, coming up on his hands and knees and staring at me in fury.
He became a bolt of lightning that hurtled at me. A menacing, jagged attack crackling with fury.
“Strong and durable, let the strength of Lord Nabu shield!”
A shield of metal appeared before me, but he struck the shield and burst through it. Molten metal sprayed before the lightning blast. The Saint struck me. I screamed as the lightning shot through my body. I staggered, Living Fire failing.
I was flesh and blood, but the lightning still arched through me. The agony consumed me.
“Pain retreats, let the chill of Lady Ereshkigal sustain!”
I howled out Endure Pain. The dangerous Death spell. The agony vanished. I would not feel my wounds, even if they were life-threatening. I could badly wound myself, not realize I was bleeding out, and collapse, but I had to win.
No compromises.
“Graven wounds pulse in pain, let the healing of Lord Dumazid flow!”
My wounds healed as ice shot at me. I dove beneath them. The Lightning Saint shot from me, the pain attack now longer working. He growled, glaring at me with fury. The Metal Saint appeared, slashing her sword for me. Fire hurtled at me.
“Lightning flashes, let the passion of Lady Uttu fly!”
I teleported away with a new plan in my head. The moment I landed, I cried out the words to Steel Body.
“Flesh to steel, let the gift of Lady Nisaba transmute!”
A blast of lightning struck me, but I didn’t feel it. My body crackled with the power as I focused on the bastard who threw it. I wanted him dead. Fire hurtled at me. I burst into a run for the Lightning Saint. Flames exploded behind me as I charged across the rocky ground.
“Thunder bursts, let the passion of Lord Ishkur explode!”
Aural Assault slammed into the Lightning Saint and threw him down. He landed hard on the ground, his body quivering. A blast of fire slammed into my side. Flames engulfed me, the heat washing over my body. Ice crashed into my back. Metal cracked.
“Thunder bursts, let the passion of Lord Ishkur explode!”
I screamed out my spell at the Lightning Saint as he struggled to rise. The sonic attack shattered stones around him. The electricity of his body burst out in all directions, sizzling across the ground. Smoke rose as the plasma dissipated.
One down.
A blow struck me in the back. I stumbled forward, Steel Body shattering. I was flesh and blood as I spun around to find the Metal Saint behind me, drawing back her massive sword for another swing to cut me in half.
“She’s attacking us from everywhere!” screamed Muyang.
Siwang spotted her bounding through the vegetation, hacking at the vines. Though these plants were Leo’s, the Saint was using them. Muyang rushed toward them only to be seized by thick tendrils that squeezed about her throat. Others grabbed her legs and ripped.
Her head popped off with an awful tearing. She became motes.
“Retreat!” Siwang shouted, backing up to the door.
Lei swung her hammer, crashing into a tree reaching for them. The thunderous impact burst the trunk apart. Mother slashed with her claws as vines reached for her. They tried to seize her, but she became ethereal. Jinzi slashed with her golden chains, but they were seized by the plants. Baoshi fired off her ruby light, striking trees, but the vines seized her. More grabbed Shandian. She blasted the vines with lightning, but there were too many.
“The breath of death kills, let the exhale of Lord Nergal slay!”
Siwang shouted, unleashing Spectral Breath. A miasma of inky black swept out of him and devoured the vines around them. The trees shriveled and died, freeing his monster girls seized. Siwang’s hope surged through him.
“Out, out!” he shouted and rushed back for the doors, but there was fresh vegetation.
Something crashed through the brush behind him. A scream cut off behind him, followed by a massive boom. Lei, Shandian, and Jinzi all died. He turned around to see a massive tree trunk that had come smashing down through the dense vegetation.
Siwang gaped.
Baoshi threw herself into him. He gasped, stumbling and falling to his knees. He looked up to see Baoshi speared through by a sharp branch. She fired a blast of ruby light, cutting down more vines reaching for him before she died.
Fire burned in the background. Yinfu whirled through the vegetation. Only something changed. Her flames exploded. She screamed, and her presence vanished from him. Shui disappeared a moment later.
Siwang gained his feet and snarled, “The breath of death kills, let the exhale of Lord Nergal slay!”
Spectral Breath killed the plants before him. He rushed forward, shriveling vegetation falling around him. He jumped over a dead log. Dying branches crashed down around him, bouncing off his armored form.
“The breath of death kills, let the exhale of Lord Nergal slay!”
He took out another swath of vegetation, exposing the exit. He was almost out, but a horrendous sound echoed. He glimpsed another tree trunk slamming down for him. Mother appeared, her mist flowing behind her. She shoved him back.
The tree slammed down on her, blocking the exit. Vegetation groaned around Siwang.
“Graven wounds pulse in pain, let the healing of Lord Dumazid flow!”
Munjan mended his flesh. The Thunder Saint appeared to the right and struck him with another sonic attack. His bones vibrated. He felt himself almost liquefying. His ears hurt so badly. He had to make himself immune to that.
“Sound vanishes, let the might of Lord Ishkur silence!”
He cast Deafen, an offensive spell only he made himself the target.
An oppressive silence fell on him. He could hear nothing. It was so strange. He said the words to Mend Flesh, not even hearing himself speak. Vina was darting around the room, chasing the Thunder Saint. The deafening claps didn’t work on her.
Something passed over Munjan.
He whirred to find the Thunder Saint stepping back, head cocked. The same attack that had nearly killed Munjan just washed over him. He was deaf. He couldn’t hear those screeches. Who would have thought an Intermediate Spell would prove so useful?
“I can’t hear, Vina,” he sent.
“What do we do?” she asked.
“Kill the fucker!”
“Lightning arcs and sizzles, let the fury of Lord Enlil spread!”
Another Arching Chain shot out at the Thunder Saint, but the small distortion vanished, appearing nearby. A stalactite fell from the ceiling, bursting apart on the disturbance. No sound reached Munjan as he pivoted and cast the spell again.
“Lightning arcs and sizzles, let the fury of Lord Enlil spread!”
Another miss.
This time, the Thunder Saint appeared right before him. He grinned at the shape. It was a halfling. That was why it was so small. A halfling thrusting a distorted sword at his belly. The blade slammed into his guts.
He gasped and staggered. Vina leaped, her mouth open wide with a scream that he couldn’t hear. She landed on the Thunder Saint, but the enemy vanished before she could do any damage. Munjan clapped his hands over the bleeding wound.
The distortion appeared to his right. Too close.
“Lightning arcs and sizzles, let the fury of Lord Enlil spread!”
The Saint vanished before the lightning could strike. Pain exploded in Munjan’s back. He staggered forward and fell to his knees. He had to heal himself. He opened his mouth to cast his next spell, but the Saint appeared and clapped a hand over Munjan’s lips.
The other drew back the sword.
