Chapter Fifty-Seven
Half burned, I snarled out a spell.
“Lightning flashes, let the passion of Lady Uttu fly!”
I teleported up the slope. I had to act fast. The Fire Saint would be on me in moments.
“Graven wounds pulse in pain, let the healing of Lord Dumazid flow!”
The burns across my body retreated. The deep wound to my belly started to close. It wasn’t enough. I was still bleeding. My flesh was still red and blistered from the fire. I had no protection. I had no time to cast defensive spells.
She appeared before me in a burst of flame, fire rushing toward me.
“The waves rage, let the seas of Lord Enki protect!”
I cast Azure Dance, an Ultimate Water Spell. The waves swept out before me, violent and consuming her fiery attack. Boulders ground and bounced in the waves. An avalanche triggered, spilling more debris down the mountainside. Steam exploded. The water burst apart.
The Fire Saint stood on a dry patch of land. Steam rose around her. She glared at me. I grinned at her and spat out the words to another Azure Dance before she could attack.
“The waves rage, let the seas of Lord Enki protect!”
The wave surged at her. Through the water, fire burned bright. The steam exploded from the waves. A boiling river crashed into a stone cliff behind her before running down the mountain, carrying debris. She emerged, her flames muted. She staggered, drenched by my spell.
I grinned and snarled, “The waves rage, let the seas of Lord Enki protect!”
Fear crossed her face. One-on-one, I could crush any saint. Her flames flared before she was swallowed by the tsunami. I advanced behind my spell, crossing the mountains swept bare down to naked stone. My bare feet gripped the rocks. I was probably cutting my feet to ribbons. I didn’t care.
The water boiled. It crashed into the mountainside and poured down it. Caught in the midst was a blackened shape. Like coal. The figure writhed. Fire flickered in her eyes and mouth as she was swept down the mountainside.
Then her body broke apart. She became soot across the surface of the water. In moments, the current swept away the remains of the Fire Saint. Elation swept through me. I stood there, clenching my hand. Skin cracked. Charred flesh fell away.
I stared down at my body. I was half-melted in spots. I bled from the wound. I felt dizzy.
Only Strength of Mountains kept me standing.
“Graven wounds pulse in pain, let the healing of Lord Dumazid flow!”
The wounds were driven back. My flesh grew pink in spots. I was still burned. Blood stopped flowing from my guts. I was aware of my surroundings as I cast another Mend Flesh on myself. The burns retreated further. One more would—
Crystal died.
I froze.
I hadn’t been paying attention to anything but the fight. Now… Why was Crystal dead? I focused on my monster girls and sent, “What is going on? Who killed Crystal?”
“Four Saints attacked the dungeon,” Maya answered. “We’re fighting one in the Throne Room. It’s going bad.”
Terror swept through me. The Throne Room was so close to my Vault. Monster Girls couldn’t defeat a Saint. I had four here, and they sent the other four to attack my base. A dual-pronged attack. They must have feared I would try to escape.
All eight fucking Saints.
“I’m on my way,” I said and went to burn a Mana Vein to build a teleport point. I could do that, connecting any two places I wanted. I had only done this once before. It was a waste of a Mana Vein with Teleport Circles.
Only, I couldn’t burn the Mana Vein.
I couldn’t establish the point.
“Shit,” I sent to Maya. “I can’t teleport from here.”
“Okay,” she sent, her disappointment palpable.
It was a day-and-a-half flight back to my dungeon. Two fucking days. It would be over long before I could reach my dungeon. I staggered and sank onto a stone. I stared down the mountain. Water poured down canyons and washed over parts of the temple. Farther below, the mountain buzzed with activity.
The elven community at the base of the mountain had noticed what was going on. I groaned. This volcano was named the Builder’s Grave. There was something about it that blocked my power. Something the elves made or a special property of this place.
“Fuck,” I growled, my stomach churning with fear. I shook.
I had never been so helpless in my life. I had to trust my monster girls and my friends.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hagane closed the distance when the stone sword flashed from the Earth Saint’s hand.
It ripped through Alt-Crystal’s scaled flesh.
Hagane raised her arm blades and slashed at the Earth Saint. He kept darting around the room. It was so frustrating. He blocked with his sword, catching both of Hagane’s arm blades. She wanted to take off his head. To hack him to bits.
Blades of wind slammed down at him. Alizee managed to get off an attack. The Earth Saint dodged to the right. He rolled on the ground and glared at Alizee. She was holding Mr. Lucina more securely as she struggled to stay in the air.
Alt-Hagane appeared on the other side. The purple-skinned fomorian swung a nodachi, a great katana, at the back of the Earth Saint. She hit him hard. He staggered from the blow. Hagane pressed the advantage, slashing.
Her blades struck him in the chest. The Earth Saint ignored them. He had his attention focused on Alizee.
“Dodge!” Hagane shouted at Alizee even as the Earth Saint fell into the floor. “Attack from Above!”
Alizee turned to the right hard.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alizee squeaked and nearly dropped Mr. Lucina. She turned hard to the right. The Earth Saint plunged past her and hit the ground. He vanished into it immediately. Alizee gasped in realization and turned to the left.
He fell past her again, swinging his sword. Not at her, but at Mr. Lucina. The evil halfling nearly hit the squirming dungeon builder. Alizee gasped. She was losing her hold on him. She couldn’t do this. Not with the Saint forcing her to dodge.
She banked to the right and surged forward as fast as she could.
He fell behind her, slamming into the ground and vanishing. Alizee knew she couldn’t keep this up, but… Maya was on the ground, forming into a large cushion and waving. It was desperate. He was exposed on the ground, but…
Alizee needed to get back on the offensive.
She dodged another attack. As he hit the ground, she threw Mr. Lucina. He fell and hit Maya, bouncing on her. Alizee then spun around and faced the ceiling. As he appeared, she threw her blades of wind. They slammed into the Earth Saint.
He screamed as they ripped deep into his body. They tore into his stony flesh. Chips flew from the impact. Pain flashed across his face. Alizee reveled in that. She squealed out her victory even as his sword cut through her body.
She hardly felt the pain. Her elation was too great. She had badly wounded the enemy.
“I leave it to you,” she sent before her body burst apart into motes.
She sank into the Void. Into Souleen’s embrace. The sylph was confident that the Earth Saint would be crushed. That the day would be saved. Already, she knew that Leo had won. They would do this. Her team would be victorious.
Go Team Leo, she thought before the deep, peaceful sleep overtook her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maya held Mr. Lucina as the Saint hit the floor.
The damaged halfling didn’t meld into the stone this time. Instead, he launched at Mr. Lucina. Maya flowed around the dungeon builder and launched at the stone blade. Her body flowed around the sword until she held it in her liquid form. She gripped his arm and slammed into him.
Her impact knocked him off balance. He stumbled for a moment. She hugged him, holding him tight. She would keep Mr. Lucina safe. He was a skeezy pervert who made a slutty version of herself, but he was still an ally.
And, frankly, all the builders were skeezy perverts. The biggest was her Leo.
“Wind blows, let the might of Lord Anu slash!”
Wind Slash rushed from Mr. Lucina, the compressed air hurtling at the Earth Saint’s side. The rocky halfling spun and put Maya between him and the attack. The magic struck the undine. It hurt her in a way that a physical attack from the Earth Saint never could.
It cut her deeply. Severed that part of her that animated the water.
“No!” Maya cried as her body became just a normal liquid. It flowed over the Earth Saint, splashing on the floor. She became a puddle before…
She died.
Frustrated, she sank into Souleen’s embrace, fearing she would never be held by Leo again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Terror filled Mr. Lucina. Leo’s Maya was dead. So were most of his monster girls. So few were still left alive. The Earth Saint advanced on him. Spines struck the stony body. The Saint flinched at them. He staggered as Kitty Delight scampered across the room.
The porn actress flapped her leathery wings and landed. Her scorpion tail raised above her head as she faced the Earth Saint. She fired off a spine and gasped. The Earth Saint’s sword plunged through her chest, and she burst into motes.
“No!” hissed Leo’s Garnet from above. She threw her net of shadows.
“Lucas!” cried his Garnet. The fairy swooped down and fired a beam of light. It struck the Earth Saint, knocking him back. The shadows bound him.
He ripped free and threw a stone knife at Lucas. He scrambled back, but it took him in the leg. He gasped, falling down. Garnet swooped to him, letting him lean on her. Hagane charged up, her shadowy blade raised high, a massive Katana that she slashed at the enemy.
“Get him clear!” Hagane shouted, slashing again.
The enemy parried as Garnet helped Lucas limp back. He could only watch as the Earth Saint ducked low and slashed, cutting through Lucas’s fomorian. His version of Hagane screamed in pain and vanished into colorful motes.
The Earth Saint lunged at Lucas.
“No!” Garnet shouted and twisted them, putting her body between Lucas and the enemy.
The sword ripped through her. She became motes in Lucas’s arms, revealing the enemy on the other side. The halfling was damaged. Lucas could see that, and… He had hurt the bastard. His spell had chipped him.
I have to do this. I have to survive!
“Wind blows, let the might of Lord Anu slash!”
The blast of wind surged at the Earth Saint, striking him and knocking him back. A chunk of stone burst from the impact. It didn’t do the same damage as Alizee’s blade, but it was enough to send him off balance.
“Wind blows, let the might of Lord Anu slash!”
The blow knocked him down. He would vanish into the stone, but then Morana darted forward. The dryad rushed in, her green hair flowing behind her. His monster girls hadn’t been as aggressive as Leo’s, but now they were stepping up.
She flung herself on him, wrapping him up. Her arms and legs held him. He struggled to roll him over. The stony halfling struggled with her. Lucas struggled to find an opening. He needed to hit the bastard again and again.
To kill him.
“Come on!” Morana gasped. “You prep! You’re going to fall to Death Lord Lucas!”
Death Lord Lucas? flashed through his mind.
Morana gasped. She stiffened and became motes. As her body disintegrated, Lucas realized he was alone. All his monster girls in the dungeon were dead. Only his lemures who were too far away to help lived. He had nothing.
Nothing but his magic.
“Wind blows, let the might of Lord Anu slash!”
The Earth Saint melted into the floor. The attack struck where he was. Lucas threw himself forward and rolled on the ground. The stone where he had been standing ripped open. A fissure that had nearly gotten him. Then the Earth Saint burst out of the ground to Lucas’s right.
“Wind blows, let the might of Lord Anu slash!”
He clipped the Earth Saint in the leg. The attack shattered a chunk of stone. The saint snarled and fell forward, his hands grabbed Lucas’s legs. Fury swirled in the halfling’s eyes. He lifted his sword to strike Lucas down.
“Storm howls, let the tempest of Lord Anu whirl!”
It was a new spell. Not one that Lucas uttered.
A tornado swept over the room. The Saint gasped and let go of Lucas. He vanished into the floor. The tornado seized Lucas, pulling him into it before it vanished. He tumbled across the ground to see Munjan strolling in, his clothes rumpled and torn.
“Where are you, bastard?” growled Munjan.
The Earth Saint appeared.
“Howl and rage, let the winds of Lord Anu gust!”
Munjan shouted another new spell that slammed wind into the Earth Saint. It threw him into the wall. It pinned him there. The force of the wind ripped stones from the Earth Saint. The figure struggled.
He would melt into the walls.
Lucas acted.
“Wind blows, let the might of Lord Anu slash!”
The wind spell struck the Earth Saint in the chest. Stone shattered. A moment later, he dropped to the ground, not pinned by Munjan’s spell. Hope surged in Lucas as he scrambled to his feet, understanding the power of a builder.
They used words to create not just dungeons, but attacks.
“Howl and rage, let the winds of Lord Anu gust!”
Munjan’s next gale struck the Earth Saint. He struck the wall, his right arm shattering. His left leg, too. He trembled there, fashioning a dagger in his right hand. The wind died, and he threw it at Munjan before hitting the ground.
“Wind blows, let the might of Lord Anu slash!”
Lucas shouted.
Munjan dived to the ground, the dagger flashing over his head. A moment later, the Beginner spell from Lucas struck the Earth Saint in the neck. Stone shattered. The halfling’s head rolled off his body. He crumbled into rocks and lay still.
“Holy shit,” Lucas said as he pushed himself up. “Holy fucking shit!”
“That’s right!” whooped Munjan. “We kicked his fucking ass!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Life revitalizes and mend, let the restoration of Lord Dumazid mend!”
Siwang did not fire Healing Bow at Bellia, but at the Death Saint.
The positive energy struck the enemy and, like an undead boss in a Final Fantasy damaged by a Phoenix Down, the Death Saint screamed in pain. He staggered back. He gripped his sword, glaring at Siwang. He drew in his breath.
“Deadly,” wheezed Bellia.
Siwang understood and… cast another Expert Level Healing spell. “Positive energy flows, let the passion of Lady Ianna spread!”
Healing Aura shone from him. The positive energy swept through the room. The miasma burst from the enemy’s mouth as Siwang advanced, passing Bellia. She gasped as the healing energy washed over her. Siwang felt more energized.
The healing aura devoured the deathly breath. It vanished. Snuffed out.
The Death Saint flinched from the energy pouring off of Siwang. He retreated, flesh sloughing off his bones and splattering on the floor. His body couldn’t maintain its cohesion. He glared at Siwang and lunged forward with his blade.
Bellia exploded past Siwang and blocked. She battered back that blade, shouting out, “For Leo and Lady Ianna!”
Her blade slammed down and cut through the Death Saint’s body. He split into pieces and crashed into the ground. The putrid smell washed over them. Siwang stared down at the corpse. Maggots writhed in the flesh.
The undead Saint did not move.
Chapter Fifty-Eight
“Leo, the dungeon is clear of enemies,” Vilkas reported.
I exhaled in relief. They did it. They defeated the four saints. I nearly shit myself when Maya died. I had almost no more companions left, but I had Munjan and Siwang. Even Mr. Lucina, I supposed, helped. He couldn’t do much, but…
“Casualties?” I sent.
“None that cannot be revived,” answered Vilkas. “Siwang destroyed the Life Saint and assisted Bellia with the Death Saint. Munjan killed the Thunder Saint and reached Mr. Lucina in time for the pair to overcome the Earth Saint in the Throne Room.”
I panted. Exhausted. I was healed, but I didn’t want to do anything. I could see the elves were making their way up the mountain. I floated into the air, my fly spell somehow still active. I soared into the cave to retrieve Nilli.
I found her lying where I had left her. I scooped her up in my arms. She was so light. I grimaced at the sight of her severed hand. I could restore that with an Ultimate Life ritual. She groaned as I turned around. Her eyes fluttered.
They opened.
“Dream?” she asked.
I shook my head.
She smiled. “I knew you would come for me.” She reached out with the stump of her right hand to touch my cheek, only to freeze. She swallowed. “That wasn’t a dream?”
“I’ll fix it,” I said and flew to the cave. “You’ll be whole.”
“I will,” she said and closed her eyes, sinking into sleep again.
“Positive energy flows, let the passion of Lady Ianna spread!”
I let Healing Aura bathe her and myself. I glanced south. The elves were already at the temple. The swiftest were making their way toward me. I didn’t have the strength to search for the Blessed Blade of Fire. I was in no mood to fight an ancient fire dragon, either.
I flew to the west, retracing my steps. In a quarter of an hour. On the horizon, Isatu appeared. The red dragon beat her wings. She roared at the sight of me. I smiled at her speed. I didn’t see the other dragons, but I was glad for her.
“Lord Leo!” she squealed with such enthusiasm as she banked to circle me. “You have her! Oh, Lord Leo!”
“I have her,” I answered, smiling at her enthusiasm. “Let me ride you. I am exhausted.”
“I would be so honored!” She grinned back at me, her draconic eyes sparkling.
I burned a Mana Vein, dropping me to 32.
She grew in size. Her wings expanded, her tail thrust out behind her, while her neck grew long. Her breasts melted into her belly. She expanded until she was the size of a house. She grinned at me as she soared beside me.
I landed on her back and held Nilli. She kept sleeping, the wind whipping her black hair. Isatu was warm, though, so it wasn’t unpleasant. I looked around and didn’t see my other dragons. Where were they?
“So, just you?” I asked.
“They can’t fly as fast as me!” Isatu said. “I’m young, and they’re all soooooooo old.”
I smiled at that.
It wasn’t long before the rest of my dragons appeared. They could fly faster than I could with my magic. They formed up around us. They were all smiles, all nodding to me. I was glad to have their presence as we soared over the jungle.
The sun set. Night rose. I found myself dozing as I held Nilli. The dragons kept flying. They had stamina. The moon rose high. It hung above us, so bright and silvery. It shone down on the jungle. A dark shadow appeared, much flatter than what we flew over.
The sea.
Then Isatu dove us to the ground. We must be back at the dungeon. What took me a day and a half flying, they did in maybe twelve hours. It was late, but I wanted to be home. They landed on the ground, Isatu battering her wings into trees.
I dismissed her transformation and floated off her. I landed on the ground. Vern and his adventurers appeared around us, saluting. Kassie rushed out of the dungeon and flew to me, her red and blue robes flapping behind her.
“Lord Leo!” my halfling said, hugging me.
“Welcome home, Lord Leo,” Vern said, nodding to me.
“Got us worried,” Sarkz said. “The dungeon nearly fell while you were away.”
“I know,” I said. “Can’t take a vacation.”
They all stared at me in confusion. I supposed the idea of a vacation didn’t exist when you lived in a feudal society. I just smiled and marched into my dungeon. I went down the familiar steps. I was home. It was perfect.
I stepped onto the teleport circle with Kassie. I glanced at Isatu and motioned for her to come. She darted to us. I left the other dragons and the adventurers to keep guard here. I wasn’t done with this portion of my dungeon.
I had to claim the Blessed Blade of Fire, but…
That was for tomorrow.
“Asud Gu!” cried Kassie.
We reached my Vault. I sighed and carried Nilli into my bedroom. I set her down in my bed and kissed her forehead. She stirred and smiled. She was still asleep. She looked skinnier than usual. She hadn’t eaten much since she was taken.
Fuckers.
I made sure Vern and his adventurers were all inside the dungeon before sealing it off.
Then I marched out into the throne room. I found Munjan, Siwang, and Mr. Lucina waiting. They all looked bedraggled. They had some chairs set up. They looked to have talked. To have eaten. Anji was sleeping on a cot.
I bet she had cooked them dinner.
“Thank you,” I said to them. “All three of you. Thank you.”
Mr. Lucina shrugged. “Just… Tried not to die, that’s all.”
“He kept the Earth Saint busy long enough to matter,” said Munjan, slapping his hand on his back. “So that’s all of them?”
“All twelve,” I said, smiling. “Let’s hope they can’t come back.”
“Don’t say that,” Siwang groaned. “You’ll jinx us.”
I laughed and glanced at Mr. Lucina. He was smiling with the others. There was something ugly I felt when I looked at him, but it was fading away. He had made copies of my girlfriend and little sister to use them. To be petty, and…
He had fought to protect all of this. He had risked his life. I decided to let that hate go. He was here. He was my ally. He had done something petty, and, well, I had taken his wife first. Just so long as I didn’t have to watch them together.
High Priestess Lysila strode in. She smiled at the sight of me. “The Gods’ champions have been defeated, Lord Leo. You stand victorious.”
“Only one more Blade to find,” Siwang said.
“Three more Shrines to claim,” Munjan added.
Then it would be over. I was here. I had overcome all these challenges. I laughed and slumped into my throne. I was so tired, but at the same time, I could feel it. Victory was in my grasp. It would not be long before I saved the Incarnation.
Chapter Fifty-Nine
Auniasiiriliiania took the captured Fire dungeon builder down into the crypt, where the backup keys were. All the spots were filled. The circle had been reconfigured. Any dungeon builder that was in the perimeter of her people’s lands would be bound.
She smiled as the elves set down the sleeping builder. He would dream for eternity, probably of his vile monster girl, not knowing that he was saving the world. That his evil had been turned to good. Auniasiiriliiania shuddered.
The device activated.
“Fuegin is ours,” she sent to her lover on the other side of the world with Barany.
The Company’s plan was almost complete. Leo would never survive an attack by the two most powerful dungeon builders in the world. Not when he believed one of them to be his friend and his ally.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fuegin’s weeks of studying were at an end.
He had poured through the books. There was nothing he could do now. Leo had won. Fuegin could not steal this from him. It was better that Leo finished it than Fuegin risk disaster by trying to usurp him.
The builder smiled.
He didn’t deserve to protect the Incarnation. Leo was such a better man than he was. He built allies. Established friendship. Ruled with fairness. Fuegin would only be another tyrant the world would hate, but Leo the Just…
He would be a hero. They would remember him for eons. The King David of this world.
Fuegin rose from his chair. He might as well become Leo’s vassal. Support him in every way possible. He walked out of the library. He had taken this city and spread more pain. More death and destruction.
All for nothing.
All—
He froze.
A powerful will slammed down on his mind. A collar choked about his throat. He reached for it, but felt nothing about him. He tried to scream, but he could not. Such a mighty force pressed down on him. His knees buckled.
Bent.
That word squeezed about his soul.
He was bound.
