I couldn’t stop trembling. I was still so overcome by the events of last night. Not even my brief nap I took the moment I boarded the Golden Hunger in the early light of morning had calmed me. So much had happened last night. We had descended into the Labyrinth and almost been butchered by the Minotaur. All so we could claim his heart to power the reforging of the High King’s sword. We had liberated the people of Grahata. No longer would they have to send young women into the Labyrinth to placate the brute.

The dark, foggy canopy of the Haunted Forest stretched out before me, an endless sea of foreboding that stretched to the horizon in all directions. The night wore on as we stood our watch in the overgrown Labyrinthine Gardens. The trees and bushes were so thick, the stone buildings of Grahata were completely obscured. There was almost no light, the night sky half-overcast, the moon struggling to shine through black clouds.

The words of the Minotaur echoed down the hallway out of the darkness of the large room before us. The source of the foul stench pervading the Labyrinth flowed with it. In the glow of my pink, ethereal light bobbing beside me, I spotted a skeletal arm stretched out of the large room, fingers twisted in agony, one of the beast’s victims. My heart hammered fast. Knight Kevin – The Free City of Grahata, Yalut Island

I walked into the Temple of Luben, a small structure dwarfed by the more popular religions of Pater, Slata, and Seljan. It was modest on the outside and plain in the inside. The floors were a checkered pattern of black and white stone, dark-stained pews forming two rows advancing towards an altar of black and white granite. Beyond, a statue of the God of Marriage, arms spread wide in welcome, was lit by candles flicking about his feet. Red tulips were held in vases beside every pew.

Stars twinkled overhead, the moon burning bright, illuminating the rocky coast of the island of Yalut ahead. The great city of Grahata was to the south, but the Golden Hunger couldn’t dock there. As a pirate ship, there were few ports she could sail into. I stood in the bow, staring at the cliffs, absently trying to spot the cove we would sail into instead, an inlet that led to a secret beach perfect to unload us so we could walk to Grahata.

I clenched my fist as I marched across the deck of the Golden Hunger. The pirate crew scurried around us, preparing the ship to cast off from the river docks of Hargone. We would put out into the Elba River and sail north through the river’s mouth and into the Nimborgoth. A northeast course would takes us to the island of Yalut and the city of Grahata. There, in the city’s labyrinth, we would slay Gewin’s son—the Minotaur.

Angela’s face hardened at my pronouncement of her crimes and the declaration that her name was attainted and stricken from the rolls of the Knights Deute. The wind from the desert whipped at her fiery hair. We stood on the outskirts of Hargone, the Halani Desert’s sands only a block away. Crowded tenement buildings made of yellow-white mud loomed around us. The pedestrians on the streets hurried inside, leaving it empty. I didn’t care. My focus was on Angela, studying her face for any sign of her heart breaking. She so wanted to be a full Knight Deute. But now her Quest would not end in her gaining full rank and acceptance into the knighthood. She was a villain, an outlaw, and I was here to bring her to justice.
