Chapter Twenty-Nine

I kept going clockwise.

I left Lady Ninazu in the Dark Shrine, where she shone like the others.

I placed Lady Tiamat in the Wind Shrine.

Lady Kishar glowed in the Ice Shrine.

I set Lady Ianna in the Life Shrine.

“One more,” Kassie said as I returned to her on the teleport circle. The halfling stood beside Fara.

“One more,” I said, trying not to tremble. This was it. I was so close. I tried not to let the excitement cloud my judgment. If there was an attack, it had to fall soon. It had to happen before I placed the last goddess.

“Asud Gu!”

The light and wind swirled around me, and we appeared in the Vault. Souleen quivered on the Void Crystal. She smiled at me, bounding with energy. I nodded to her as I reached the black gemstone. I opened up the interface.

I had to navigate through the menus and found the teleport circle attached to the Life Shrine. I shifted that to the Water Shrine. It took a few minutes to scroll through the dungeon. I placed it against the entrance.

That done, I strode into the Goddess Room.

Lady Ninli was the only one left.

The Lady of Water lay peacefully, her body made of water like Maya. I scooped up the goddess. She was light in my arms. I had my defensive spells on. Armor. Stone skin. Flamebody. Static Aura. I enchanted myself with all that I could.

I marched out of the room and into the Vault. Kassie waited on the teleport circle. Kassie drew in a deep breath. She touched the brass magic circle she wore about her neck. She would need that to cast her offensive spells.

If it came to that.

“Asud Gu!”

Light and wind flashed once. We were there outside the Water Shrine. I carried her into the shrine, the Water Glyph floating in the air. I set her down beneath the three arrows that pointed upward, the middle one the tallest.

I backed out of the geode. The moment I stepped out, the light shone.

I held my breath.

Fara stepped up beside me as we waited. Something was happening. I could feel it thrumming through my dungeon. This power that went to circle around it like a magic circle that was activating. This was it.

The light shone louder. A hum filled the air. The entire dungeon shuddered.

“This is it,” I whispered.

“Yes,” Fara whispered.

“My dungeon is vibrating,” Siwang reported. “Near the shrines.”

“It’s activating,” I said. “Everyone, it’s happening.”

I was almost deafened by the shouts of all my followers. They were all so excited. Hundreds of monster girls. This was it. The power built and built. My bones rattled with it. The light shone brighter. I winced, looking away.

My heart pounded in my chest.

I could hardly breathe.

This was it.

I was about to save the Incarnation.

I—

The dungeon shuddered like it struck a barrier. The growing hum and glow seemed to stall. It was like an engine that was revving up, but was suddenly starved for fuel. I shot a glance at Fara. Was this normal?

Her head cocked to the side.

She could feel it, too. The massive spell stalled.

“What the fuck is going on?” burst from my lips, the frustration boiling through me. I was so damn close, and now this. “What happened?”

“It is incomplete,” said Fara.

“Incomplete?” I shot a look into the Shrine where Lady Ninli glowed. “What piece are we missing? What else is needed?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fauraliiithiliana pondered that exact question as she followed Leo onto the Teleport Circle, where a frightened Kassie waited.
The elf hardly heard the words she spoke or felt the effects of the Wind and Light magic transporting them across the dungeon. Leo marched into the Vault, where a concerned Souleen whimpered.
“Do you know what happened?” Leo asked.
“All the mana veins surged,” Souleen said. “The entire dungeon hummed, but then…”
“It stalled,” he grunted, his voice echoing behind his helmet. Flames flickered through the eye slit from his other spells. “Shit, I want to see what’s going on out there. I’m going to open up the Outposts. Let the monster girls see if anything happened.”
Fauraliiithiliana nodded absently. They were missing something. They had the Goddess’s power. Did they need the gods’ powers? But we had those with the swords, right? She thought so, but something was missing.
She could not see it. What were they missing? Her mind ached. She rubbed at her forehead as Leo was nodding. He was receiving reports from his monster girls. The communications washed over Fauraliiithiliana. He was keeping everyone in position.
“You look exhausted,” Leo said. He had banished his protective spells. He was no longer in armor and had a flaming body.
Fauraliiithiliana blinked.
“I know I fucking feel it,” he groaned, stretching. “We’re missing something. Something so obvious, we’re going to feel like idiots when we realize it.”
“I shall go to my father, and we shall consider it in greater detail,” Fauraliiithiliana said, her head throbbing. She yawned, her ears twitching. “We shall find it out.”
“You look like you need sleep,” Leo said. He drew in a deep breath. “Rest. It can wait.”
“Can it?” she asked.
“She’s been waiting four thousand years. What’s another day?” He shook his head. “What?” He swayed and stumbled to the right. He looked so dizzy.
“Lord Leo?” gasped Fauraliiithiliana. “What’s wrong?”
“I…” He leaned against the wall. Kassie squeaked in fright. “What the fuck is this?”
Chapter Thirty
Nightfall came, and I left the house with my women. All of them.
It was time to rescue Morana. To wake her up.
Since the dream with her last night, I had felt her spirit floating nearby. She was close to me, urging me on. She was certain this would save her, and who was going to argue with her? The hospital wasn’t terribly far, and we didn’t have enough cars for everyone to fit.
So we walked.
The streets felt empty. So did the city. The setting sun left the horizon glowing orange while the deep blue of night swallowed the rest of the sky. I didn’t spy the moon. Maybe it was a new moon tonight. A wind blew.
My skin prickled.
Morana’s spirit tugged at my hand, urging me on.
We passed the coffee house where Terra worked, but instead of going right to my high school, we went left. The hospital wasn’t far. We crossed another empty street. No one was driving. The houses we passed felt empty.
“Where is everyone?” Garnet asked.
“Todlicht,” Halia whispered. “We’re surrounded.”
I nodded. “That’s why we have to save Morana. He did something to her.”
The spirit of Morana nodded. I couldn’t precisely see her, but I felt her emotions. She was in danger.
“This is so a trap,” muttered Nina Naughty.
“Yep,” I said. “Halia’s been giving you all those powers of hers. You can fight the undead.”
We had already weathered an attack, and Mrs. Lucina and Mom had proven very effective against the undead. Now we have more women. Eleven with powers. That was why I had to walk in the middle of my women. They were protecting me.
“Everyone’s gone,” whispered Garnet. “Or dead.”
“Yeah,” Maya said. Her parents had vanished from her home at the end of the street. They weren’t the only ones who had vanished. My other women couldn’t get hold of friends or family in the town.
“Are we the only ones left alive in the city?” wondered Ms. Trueno.
“Maybe,” Hagane said. “The hospital looks abandoned.”
It did. There was this emptiness to it, but Morana was still motioning us on. We could be attacked in there. I rubbed my hands up and down my arms. I should have worn a sweater. It was getting cold as the sun’s light vanished for the day.
Night had fallen.
We entered the hospital. The lights were on, but no nurse manned the table. Lana Fulmine looked around while Nina Naughty moved around behind the counter. Mom smiled reassuringly at me, though there was worry in her eyes.
“I just want them to come,” Crystal muttered. “I will freeze those zombie bitches.”
“Yes!” Alizee said. “We’ll show them.”
“Got her,” said Nina Naughty as she looked up from the computer. “Room 413.”
We did already know that—we had visited before—but I didn’t want to take away her good idea.
The elevators were large to fit gurneys, so we all piled in and rode it up to the fourth floor. This one was also empty. None of the rooms had patients in them. A chill pervaded the air. Mom gasped, hugging herself despite the knit sweater she wore.
“What?” I asked.
“This place,” she whispered.
“Death,” I muttered. “It’s around Morana.”
Mom nodded.
Morana’s spirit beckoned me on. We headed down the hallway. The rooms looked abandoned, like the patients were evacuated and the equipment was left behind, along with discarded needles. I hoped that they were taken somewhere else and not…
“Let’s be ready,” Lana Fulmine said. Though she had just arrived last night, she sounded like she had always led my women. She was the first one I summoned in the other world. Maybe she took on that rule there. “Not all of us go into the room. Set up a guard in the hallway.”
Halia nodded and opened the door to the room. There was Morana lying sleeping. She was hooked up to monitors, but she didn’t have anything over her mouth. She looked like she was just sleeping. Her spirit hovered over her body. I could make her out now.
The spirit motioned me. She wanted me to make love to her sleeping body to wake her up.
“I need you,” Morana spoke. I could hear her now. Her spirit sank into her body. “Wake me up. I love you, Leo.”
“Wake her up, big perv,” Maya said, moving to her bedside.
Halia nodded and opened the door to the bathroom. She looked around the room and nodded. She headed outside. Mom moved into the corner of the room, waiting. Maya stayed beside the bed. Hagane was the third one to enter the room.
The others were outside.
“The attack won’t come yet,” said Hagane. “He’ll wait for us to be sure of our victory.”
“Yeah,” I muttered and opened Morana’s hospital gown.
“Please, please, love me,” Morana’s spirit spoke, her small breasts rising and falling. They were adorned by the heart monitor.
Hagane turned the machine off. I tore off the pads. Morana just lay there, looking so peaceful. I stroked her cheek and kissed her. I felt her spirit quiver in excitement. Her body responded with a slight moan.
Her flesh wanted to be awakened.
I undid my fly as I mounted the bed. I pulled out my cock. Morana lay there, looking so beautiful. Her pale flesh contrasted with her black hair. She breathed slowly. Her spirit quivered inside of her, waiting for me to awaken her.
I leaned down to her body and kissed her again.
“Take me,” Morana moaned in my thoughts. “Pop my cherry and save me.”
My cock ached as I pressed it into her pussy lips. I loved the feel of her hot flesh against my cock. Her cunt felt wet and juicy. She was ready for me to make love to her. Her body ached for it. Hard nipples pressed into my chest.
“Don’t tease me, Leo,” Morana moaned as I kissed her body. “I’m so ready to be awakened.”
I thrust.
My cock hit her hymen. She trembled beneath me, her arms and legs wrapped around me. She was still asleep, but she responded to me. She held me to her, whimpering softly against my lips as her maidenhead stretched and stretched.
“Yes!” squealed Morana’s spirit.
Her cherry popped.
I sank into her warm and welcoming pussy. Morana’s body sighed. I broke the kiss and stared down at her. Her eyes fluttered behind her eyes as her cunt welcomed me. I would save her. I was one with her flesh.
“You are mine, Morana,” I whispered.
“Yours,” her soul answered. “Oh, oh, you feel so good in me. I am so close to waking up. Fuck me. Make me cum!”
I smiled and drew back my cock. Her body shuddered beneath me. A whimper of pleasure escaped her lips. I plunged back into her willing pussy. Her moans grew louder as I pumped away at her. My nuts slapped into her taint.
I thrust into her cunt over and over again. Her body trembled beneath me. I loved staring at her face, twisting with her pleasure. She felt on the cusp of waking up. Her arms and legs held me tight. Her fingernails bit into my back.
“Wake her up, big perv,” Maya whispered.
“Yes,” Mom said with such hope. Almost like a prayer.
The hospital bed creaked as I vigorously pumped away at Morana’s pussy. Her soul moaned in my mind while her body groaned. That hot twat clamped down on my dick, increasing the friction. It was spectacular to pound her pussy.
Her entire cunt gripped my dick. She held me tight. I loved fucking her like this. I hammered her cunt with all that I had. It was a beautiful thing. Her eyes fluttered as the pressure built and built at the tip of my dick.
“Leo!” Morana moaned. “Dark Lord Leo! You’re going to wake me up. You’re claiming my body! Take me so hard!”
“Yes,” I groaned. “Wake up! Return to us!”
“I’m so close,” the ghost answered. “Dark Lord, I’m so close. Don’t stop fucking me. Your cock feels amazing!”
I plunged into her pussy, reveling in the warmth of my lover’s snatch. She held me tight as her cunt massaged my dick. I hammered her cunt, rushing toward my climax. I loved every inch of her hot twat gripping my rod. I rose toward my climax. I hurtled closer and closer to it.
I loved how she gripped my cock. How she held me tight with her hot flesh. It was a beautiful thing to make love to Morana. My nuts tightened with my need to cum. They slapped into her taint. Her body trembled beneath me.
“That’s it, Dark Lord,” her soul moaned in my mind. “I’m so close! I love you, Dark Lord!”
Her pussy went wild around my dick.
I groaned as I loved her cunt spasming around my dick. She rippled about me. It was such a glorious moment. I pumped away at her cumming cunt. Her body trembled beneath me, fingernails raking down my back.
“Cum in me and wake me up, Dark Lord!” squealed Morana’s soul.
I buried into her and erupted.
Her eyes snapped up as she squealed, “Dark Lord Leo!”
Maya and Mom shouted for joy as I dumped my load into her writhing pussy. Her cunt rippled around my dick. The ecstasy shot through me. I groaned with passion as I pumped my load into her. I dumped more and more of my seed into her.
“Yes!” I groaned as I flooded her. “That’s… What the fuck?”
Something in her body surged out of her. A blackness that grabbed me. It seized me. I bolted upright, ripping my cock out of her body. My cum splashed on her body as she screamed. The black mist, as cold as death, poured into my body.
The world spun around me and went dark. The deathly trap gripped me and yanked me down into the black.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“She’s been waiting four thousand years,” I muttered. “What’s another day?”

I wanted to contact Fuegin. To find out if he had any ideas, but I suddenly felt so fatigued. I shook my head and gasped out as I swayed and stumbled to my right. The world spun around me as this deathly chill washed over me.

“Lord Leo?” gasped Fara. “What’s wrong?”

“I…” I caught myself on the wall, Kassie squeaking in fright and rushing toward me. This deathly darkness reached through me. I felt it coming from so far away. It was the power of Death. “What the fuck is this?”

I was under attack. Death seized me and yanked me down into the black.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fauraliiithiliana screamed as Lord Leo collapsed on the ground.
“No!” Kassie screeched as she ran to him.
“No, no, no,” Souleen whimpered from the top of the Void Crystal. She trembled there as Leo lay on the ground, unmoving.
He’s dead, thought Fauraliiithiliana. She stood there, frozen in panic. Her heart thundered in her chest. He just died.
Then another voice hissed at her fear, Don’t be an idiot, Fauraliiithiliana. If he were dead, you would be dead, too.
“What’s wrong?” Fauraliiithiliana asked Kassie.
“He’s cool to the touch,” the halfling whispered. She strained and rolled Lord Leo onto his back. She pressed her head to his bare chest. “He has a heartbeat. It’s slow. Steady. He’s breathing. But…”
“He was attacked,” the elf said. She concentrated and found the companions and Smerta. “Sound the alarm. Be ready for an attack. The enemy has just assaulted Lord Leo. He has collapsed.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Morana’s body awoke, her soul back in control.

Then something awful burst in her. A trap left behind by that awful man. Leo bolted upright, his cock ripping out of her cumming pussy. His cum splashed hot on her before he pitched forward onto her. He lay limp, his body cool.

“Leo!” screamed his mother.

“What?” gasped Maya.

Morana shuddered beneath her Dark Lord. He was alive, she could feel that, but Death had seized him. He collapsed on her. She cradled him as others burst into the room. Mrs. Baldwin loomed over Morana, grabbing Leo and rolling him over.

“It’s a trap!” Morana gasped, panic sweeping over her. “No, no, no, I was a trap! That monster wanted this. Oh, no, no, I was a trap! Death seized his soul! Just like with me! His soul is gone. His body is empty!”

“Is that true?” Lana Fulmine asked.

“He’s unconscious,” Maya sobbed. “Leo! Leo!”

“He’s alive,” Mrs. Baldwin said, tears streaming down her face. “He’s alive, but… He’s so distant.”

“This is all my fault,” whimpered Morana as she sat up and hugged herself, Leo lying unconscious beside her.

“It’s not,” Ms. Trueno said and hugged the girl. “It truly is not.”

“Todlicht,” Garnet hissed. “It’s his fault! That bastard!”

“We must go,” Halia said. “Todlicht could attack at any moment. This is his territory.”

Chapter Thirty-One

Everyone gasped at Halia’s words.

The paladin could feel it. Death was coming. They had to go.

“A gurney,” Hagane said. “Look for a gurney. We can put him on that.”

Halia did not know that word, but she trusted Hagane. She peered up and down the hallway, the skin on her arms prickling. The other women fanned out and started thrusting open doors. Halia’s heart raced. The temperature seemed to drop.

But she had awakened all the women. They all had powers. They were not helpless. They would protect Leo and find a way to rescue him. She felt it in her heart. There was a way to save him. There had to be.

Lady Sherida sent me to this world to protect him, thought Halia. I cannot fail him. I mustn’t.

She battered down that fear as Crystal shouted in triumph. She emerged from a room pushing a bed with wheels. The gurney? It must be. She rushed down the hallway, the others moving out of the way. Morana was already off the bed, her hospital gown closed. No, she didn’t have any powers yet, but the rest did.

“How do we transfer him?” asked Mrs. Baldwin. “He’s a big guy.”

“Grab the sheets,” Hagane said. “Get the corners. then heft and slide him onto the gurney.”

“Right!” Crystal said, maneuvering the gurney beside the bed.

Mrs. Baldwin, Maya, Crystal, and Hagane lifted the four corners of the sheets. They all gasped at the strain as they shifted Leo onto the gurney. He was down in a moment. Hagane, panting, started strapping him in place.

“Let’s move!” Lana Fulmine shouted. “Elevator!”

They all rushed down the hallway, the wheels of the gurney squeaking. Terra reached the elevator first and hit the button. The doors opened. They piled in, shoving the gurney in the middle. Halia trembled, pressed up against the wall with Crystal and Alizee squeezed against her.

The elevator lurched down, passing the third floor.

The power went out.

Everything plunged into darkness. Women gasped in fright. They squirmed. Halia’s heart thundered. What did they do now? They were stuck in this box. She couldn’t move. How could they escape? She hated this world’s strange technology.

Light flared.

Mrs. Lucina glowed. The light drove back the darkness, showing panicked faces. Maya, gripping Leo’s unconscious hand, shot Halia a panicked look. Mrs. Baldwin, at the front of the gurney where she had been pushing it, trembled. Alizee whimpered. Morana gasped, hugging Crystal.

“The backup generators for the hospital should kick on,” said Hagane.

As she spoke those words, the lights flickered on. The elevator lurched and descended down to the ground floor. The doors burst open, and Lana Fulmine and Nina Naughty jumped out. The others followed. Mrs. Baldwin pushed the gurney out. Halia trembled, thankful to be free.

The doors to the hospital whisked open to reveal the black parking lot and streets. Power was out for the entire city. The stars above vanished as a dark cloud slid over them from the south, consuming them. No moonlight.

Only Mrs. Lucina’s illumination.

“We must guard the gurney,” Halia said. “Death is here!”

Morana whimpered.

“Take the gurney, sweetie,” Mrs. Baldwin said, grabbing Morana’s arm. “We’ll, protect you and Leo. We have powers.”

“I’m really regretting walking here,” said Terra. “We could have stolen some of the neighbors’ cars or something.”

“Yeah,” Alizee squeaked.

“We just have to march forward,” said Lana Fulmine. “Mrs. Lucina, you take point.”

Halia extended her hand and felt the power in her stirring. A sword made of light flashed into existence. The others had powers, too. They would fight to protect Leo. They moved out into the parking lot when a rank smell washed over them.

Putrid. The stench of death and rot. A squishy sound echoed in the darkness. The zombies were around them. The group picked up into a jog, moving through the parking lot. The gurney wheels clattered on the ground.

“Get ready!” Halia shouted, raising her blade as she jogged on the right of the van, a few steps behind Mrs. Lucina. “Here they come!”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mrs. Lucina trembled at those words as she shone bright.
The zombies charged into her illumination before her and flinched. There were dozens of them, their bodies waxy and clothes torn. They had wounds. Claw and bite marks. They had been attacked and turned into zombies by…
Other zombies.
“Attack!” Halia shouted and charged forward, her glowing sword flashing.
She cut through a zombie with her blade of light. It fell into two pieces at her feet. Another lurched at her, hands reaching out, fingernails sharp and stained with rusty red. Mrs. Lucina pointed her finger. Light flashed like an intense beam.
It struck the zombie in the face, skin smoking. The zombie lurched back from the brilliance. Halia’s sword flowed and finished it off. The other women shouted. From out of the darkness, the horde rushed at them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Garnet trembled in fear.

She only had darkness to use. She threw it out at zombies rushing out of them, smothering their eyesight. They stumbled blind, crashing into each other. Lightning flashed. Ms. Trueno shrieked. Garnet’s heart thundered in her chest.

She had to be strong, but these were disgusting zombies. Her big brother lay unconscious. She needed him, and he could do nothing. She trembled in fright, not sure what to do. Her knees knocked as she froze.

We’re going to die, wailed through her mind.

She hugged herself, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“Garnet!” Mom shouted and grabbed her arm. “What are you doing?”

“I… I…” sputtered the frightened girl.

“Are you or are you not Lady Big Perv Garnet, Mistress of Horniness, Queen of Depravity, and Empress of Kinkiness?”

Garnet froze at those words. They echoed from those fuzzy memories of the other world. Of being strong. Of fighting and flying through the skies. Of not being afraid to fight because she was Dark Lord Big Bro’s little succubus.

“Kweh, heh, heh!” Garnet laughed, this absurd and almost giddy rush bubbling through her. It verged on madness as she threw her arms wide. “Bow down before Lady Big Perv Garnet!”

She threw darkness out, engulfing a zombie. It stumbled off into the horde.

“Mistress of Horniness, Queen of Depravity, and Empress of Kinkiness!”

She would fight because she had that strength in her. She knew it from the other world. She wanted to jump on Leo’s gurney and throw her darkness for it. She blinded the foes, allowing the others to dispatch them with ease.

“Kweh, heh, heh!” she laughed at the darkness.

At that bastard Todlicht, who… He drowned me. He drowned me and made my big brother watch! That meanie!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Out of the darkness, headlights flashed. They veered and crashed into a pole. A man shouted and burst from the car. There was a demonic horde around him. A person who had escaped Todlicht’s cull and tried to escape.
He screamed, and Nina Naughty could do nothing as he died.
However, she felt the heat in the car. In the engine that was still running. It was burning the gasoline. She seized that energy and detonated the car. It exploded into a fire that engulfed a group of zombies, setting them alight like burning trees in a forest fire.
They stumbled around, covered in burning gasoline. They bumped into others and spread the fire. Nina Naughty smiled at it, taking pleasure in it as she seized the fire. She fanned the flames and spread them to the others.
They would get Leo back to the house.
Halia cut a path for them through the zombies. They just had to blunt the horde.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hagane felt metal nearby. They passed a parked car on the street. She touched it and stole the steel from the frame. She fashioned the metal into a pair of swords. They were not armblades, but they felt familiar in her hands.

She hacked at the zombies as they rushed at her. Her blades cut into their limbs. They fell back, dripping gore and ichor. She fought with determination, her glasses slipping on her nose. She would not let Leo get hurt.

They battled down the street. Fire flowed through the air, controlled by Nina, and slammed into another zombie group. Hagane hacked off an arm before she beheaded the zombie. She panted, her body not used to the exertion.

I never grew tired as an animated statue.

She was growing out of breath, though. Sweat poured down her brow. The muscles in her arms burned as she raised her swords to swing again. She struck another zombie, cutting deep into the shoulders. She threw it back.

Another lunged in and grabbed her arm. A mouth opened wide. It bit into her.

Hagane screamed.

“No!” Alizee shouted.

Wind struck the zombie and ripped it away. Hagane gasped, dropping one of her swords. Blood streaked down her arm. She stumbled, nearly colliding with the gurney. The pain was so intense. The wound throbbed.

Keep moving! You have to keep moving!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maya couldn’t do anything. She could control water, but there wasn’t much around them.
Hagane stumbled on the other side of the gurney, blood spilling down her arm. Maya couldn’t do anything about it. She needed water. She could feel some at a distance. She peered around, struggling to figure out where it lay.
It was…
Above me?
The clouds that had roiled in were made of water, but they weren’t releasing it. Whatever reasons caused clouds to shed their rain hadn’t happened. Still, Maya reached for it. She just needed some of that water up there. Just enough.
Her thoughts soared into the misty cloud. Water vapor. That was all the clouds were. She drew the clouds closer together, making the mist denser. Water started to precipitate out of the vapor. Rain fell to the earth.
Everyone gasped at the sudden cold deluge that washed over them.
Maya smiled and seized the water. The intense rain lasted for but a dozen seconds before the clouds above regained their equilibrium. It was enough. She gathered up the water, sweeping it off the others and gathering it into a ball that floated before her.
She used that water to batter zombies. She struck one blinded by Garnet, throwing it to the ground. She pulled back the water before sending it into another. She struck them with watery fists. She wasn’t killing them, but she did hold them at bay.
They kept rushing down the street to the coffee shop ahead.
Halfway home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Morana whimpered.

She pushed the gurney before her. They were moving. The wheels kept hitting zombie parts. Hagane staggered beside her, bleeding so badly. Death reached all around them. Morana should be brave. She had those memories of being Dark Lord Leo’s banshee, but…

I’m just a scared girl in a hospital gown here.

All she could do was keep pushing his gurney. Sweat dripped down her brow. Her heart thundered in her chest. The zombies lurched out of the darkness. Fire shot across the gurney, striking one in the face. Water balls slammed into others, driving them back. Halia hacked, and light flared. Mrs. Baldwin touched them, and they died.

Just keep pushing, Morana told herself, fighting back tears. Leo saved you from that hell. You have to save him now. Save your Dark Lord and find your happiness!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alizee whipped the wind around her.
She laughed as it flowed over her body, whipping up her cheerleader skirts. Her blonde hair fluttered in it as she swept it out to protect the others. She drove them back, working with Ms. Trueno and her shrieks.
From the back, zombies rushed forward.
She slammed wind into one, bowling him into others. They tripped and fell. A pile up.
Flames from Nina Naughty slammed down into them. The porn star was conserving the fires, letting them burn the zombies before pulling the heat off to attack another group. Alizee grinned. They were winning.
The coffeehouse passed by. They would be nearing the street. They just had to keep fighting.
Alizee squealed out, “Go, Team Leo, Go!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Yes,” Mrs. Zoe Baldwin whispered in response to Alizee’s boisterous outburst.

She moved to the back, touching the zombies. When she did, she destroyed the energy animating their bodies. They dropped dead. It angered her. She recognized some. Neighbors. Friends. People of her community.

While they had spent the last few days huddled up in the house, waiting for the attack, they had abandoned their town to Todlicht, and he had decimated it. The horror of that weighed on her soul. Had they made a mistake not going out to fight Todlicht?

None of them had even considered it.

Now…

She glanced at her son sleeping. Blood dripped onto the gurney. Mrs. Baldwin gasped, realizing that Hagane was bleeding. Mrs. Baldwin burst into a jog to catch up to the girl. The motherly woman touched another zombie on the way, disrupting its life.

It collapsed and died.

She reached Hagane and touched her shoulder. Mrs. Baldwin poured healing energy into the young woman. Hagane gasped, her eyes widening. They stopped walking, the gurney passing them by as the flesh of Hagane’s bicep knitted together.

“There,” Mrs. Baldwin panted. “All better.”

“Thank you,” the polite, Japanese girl said. “Watch out!”

Hagane pushed Mrs. Baldwin to the side and lunged past her, impaling a zombie in the chest. Another lurched out of the darkness. Mrs. Baldwin touched that one and ended the energy animating its body.

Wind rushed by them, bowling over others. The fight continued.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maya got most of the water, but Crystal froze some of it before the sudden downpour ended.
She whipped blades of ice about, ripping into the throats of the zombies. It wasn’t as effective as Halia’s sword or Hagane’s, but it slowed them down. They just had to hold out a little longer. They were almost home.
Fire leaped past her, crashing into a zombie’s face. Wind struck another, flinging it off into the darkness. Garnet laughed in that dumb anime way, throwing her darkness. It was chaos. Crystal grinned and flicked her ice blade into a zombie.
It struck bone and shattered.
The zombie lurched in at her. Crystal gasped and thrust out her arms, grabbing it by the shoulders. The terrible stench of its rotting breath filled her nose. She gagged, fighting back the urge to vomit. The odor soaked her taste buds.
It lunched in, snarling.
“No!” she screamed.
It was stronger than her. Had more mass. She tried to retreat and tripped. She landed on the ground with its bloated weight on her. Teeth sank into her throat. She shrieked as it tore at her neck. Blood spurted. Pain flared.
Fear swept through Crystal, an icy wind that numbed her entire body.
Crystal went down.
Ms. Rosa Trueno drew in a breath and screamed.
Her shout struck the zombie. It half-burst and flew off Crystal. The girl lay on the ground, blood streaming from the wound. Ms. Trueno rushed to her, and more zombies rushing in. She screamed again. A bloated stomach erupted, and two more collapsed.
“Crystal!” she gasped. “Zoe!”
She bent down to her former student and thrust her arm beneath Crystal. She hauled her up. The girl gurgled, blood spilling from her throat. Ms. Trueno managed to help the girl stand. She staggered, her body losing strength.
“Zoe!” shouted Ms. Trueno again.
Lightning flashed. Light flared. The teacher hauled the bleeding girl to her brother’s gurney and threw her on it. She lay beside Leo. Then Ms. Trueno put her hand over the bleeding neck. Morana screeched, her face pale in the flashing light.
“Zoe!” Ms. Trueno cried one last time.
Mrs. Baldwin rushed over, her eyes wide. She took her daughter’s hand. Green energy engulfed them both. The wound beneath Ms. Trueno’s hand shifted. She gasped, the pulse of blood slowing. Mrs. Baldwin stumbled as she kept walking, a zombie looming behind her.
Ms. Trueno screamed.
Water struck another.
“Kweh, heh, heh!” chortled Garnet as if she didn’t realize how badly Crystal was hurt.
Wind whipped around them, Alizee darting past in her cheer outfit. Zombies fell over. Crystal groaned, her eyes fluttering open. Ms. Trueno pulled her hand back from the wound to see only blood smeared over her skin.
“She lost a lot of blood,” Mrs. Baldwin said. “Let her rest.”
The teacher nodded.
Lana Fulmine pulled a charge from the sky.
Lightning flashed down to her finger before shooting off into the dark and blasting apart zombies. She ran near the front. Mrs. Lucina’s light burned other zombies. Halia’s sword hacked them to pieces. They were flooding out of everywhere.
“That’s the street!” shouted Mrs. Lucina, her light illuminating a sign. “Come on!”
Lana Fulmine nodded and thrust her hand into the sky again. She connected with all that energy boiling in the clouds. The lightning shot down and arced out of her body. It struck another zombie that exploded into bits of rotten flesh.
The others attacked. Wind flashed by her, rustling her hair. Fire burned to the right. Ms. Trueno screamed. Hagane attacked with swords. Lana Fulmine glanced back. Crystal lay beside Leo, blood covering her throat.
Lana Fulmine swallowed.
“It’s open!” shouted Mrs. Lucina. “No zombies on the street.”
Lana Fulmine channeled lightning.
Lightning blasted the lead zombies, clearing a hole for them.
Terra’s heart raced with hope as she ran on the side of the gurney. She was ripping up the asphalt with her power and pelting zombies with stones. They sometimes broke bones, but mostly knocked them back.
They’ll keep coming. I have to stop them.
Their street was clear. The harem was running into open ground. The zombies stumbled behind them, flowing in from the surrounding streets. So many of them. Terra turned, stopped, and knelt, pressing her hand into the asphalt.
Mrs. Baldwin gasped, “What are you doing?”
“This!” Terra said.
She thrust her power into the street and ripped open a mighty rift at the mouth of the cul-de-sac. It tore through the larger street and ran a block in both directions. The ground crumbled away, dozens or more zombies falling into the depths.
Terra panted at the effort. She swayed. A zombie that was on this side of the rift lunged for her. Mrs. Baldwin touched it, killing it. Terra forced herself to stand and jog after the gurney and the others. The zombies milled on the other side.
That slowed them down.
For now.
What happened to Leo? Fear trembled through Terra as they ran for their house.
